Ally McCoist now understands just how bad Rangers strikers have been in recent years.

The Gers are facing a serious problem up-front right now after two injuries hit them within weeks.

Youssef Chermiti has been ruled out for potentially the whole season after tearing his ACL against Hibernian.

That prompted the Gers to reroute funds to a new number nine in the shape of Kevin Kelsy.

The Venezuelan has now come in and watched Lawrence Shankland tear his hamstring ahead of his debut cameo.

That is the problem that Rangers face right now, but there has been striker issues at Ibrox for years.

Going without this duo for a large portion of the campaign will certainly be a blow.

It will leave Derek McInnes to operate with Kelsy and Ryan Naderi as his only recognised senior striker options.

However, the true issues with the number nine role have existed since long before this season.

That was voiced via talkSPORT on Friday as Charlie Austin raised a point, "Rangers haven't had someone score 20-plus [Premiership] goals since 2010."

It's fair to say McCoist was blown away by that, replying: ""That is absolutely incredible. It's staggering when you think about it.

"They've got a problem because Chermiti is out for the season and Shankland's having an operation on his hamstring. They've brought another lad in, but that is incredible that statistic."

Who has been the best Rangers striker since 2010?

Looking back to 2010, it was Kris Boyd who clocked up over 20 goals for the Light Blues.

He scored 23 and assisted five in the Premiership and was closely followed by Kenny Miller's 18 goals and nine assists.

Alfredo Morelos and Cyriel Dessers got 18 in their best seasons, while Chermiti got 15 in his debut Premiership season.

It says a lot that James Tavernier once got 17 goals from right-back as he outscored the likes of Dessers, Fabio Silva and Danilo in the 2023/24 season.

Rangers' problems are summed up by these sort of stats and prove the struggles they have faced.

McCoist's reaction is worrying and seriously needs someone like Kelsy to hit the ground running after his recent move.
