Kevin Muscat and Derek McInnes ‘leading the way’ to become new Rangers manager after Michael Beale sack
Keith Jackson has shared that Kevin Muscat and Derek McInnes are currently “leading the way” to become the next Rangers manager after Michael Beale was sacked.
The Gers called time on Beale’s reign as boss after ten months following the 3-1 home defeat to Aberdeen on Saturday, leaving them seven points behind Celtic so early on in the season.
Several names have been linked to the role, but giving his verdict on the hunt for a new manager in the print edition of the Daily Record (3 October, page 50) he revealed who currently leads the way to get the job.

“Two names are already leading the way in the shape of Kevin Muscat and Derek McInnes – and both men are more than equipped,” he said.
“Muscat’s credentials as the next Ange Postecoglou will excite a support which is crying out for and attacking manager with a clearly defined, contemporary style of play.
“For his part, McInnes learned from the greatest Rangers manager of all time in Walter Smith.”
Stand out candidates
It says a lot about the market Rangers are shopping in for a new manager if those two are the top candidates for the role right now.
Muscat has done well in Australia and many people will make comparisons to Ange Postecoglou, but the chances of lightning striking twice in the same way are surely too high to actually come to fruition.

McInnes may have learnt from Smith but that doesn’t mean he will ever reach that level and if that’s the best reason for hiring him then he should definitely be left out of the reckoning.
There’s nothing wrong with the club getting creative with their process to find the right man and going left-field, but bringing someone in just because of their affiliation to the club isn’t a good reason – just look at Beale.
There are plenty of options out there who would be good options and if we have to splash the cash a little bit to convince them then so be it. But we can’t afford to get this appointment wrong.
