Lyall Cameron: Rangers outcast can thrive in revamped Danny Rohl attack – he’s proven why
Lyall Cameron put up some encouraging underlying numbers last season, offering hope of a potential Rangers breakout in 2026-27.
Signed on a pre-contract agreement in February last year, Cameron joined Rangers fresh off the back of an outstanding 2024-25 campaign.
14 goals and 11 assists in 41 total appearances for Dundee showed just how much ability the versatile midfielder possesses.
However, his first few months at Ibrox in 2025-26 didn’t really go to plan, with his 10 appearances in all competitions ensuring he was unable to win an immediate starting role in Govan.
That saw him make a loan switch to Aberdeen last winter, and whilst his production by way of goal contributions wasn’t anything to write home about, his hidden stats show just how much potential he’s got.

How good were Lyall Cameron’s stats in 2025-26?
Cameron’s Rangers future has already been questioned for how his debut campaign in Glasgow went, with 2026-27 evidently being a big year ahead for him.
At 23 and contracted with Gers until the summer of 2029, the midfielder still has plenty of time on his side to make a success of things at Ibrox.

But if you were to simply look at his zero goals and one assist in the Scottish Premiership from last season, you’d be forgiven for thinking that last term was a complete disaster for him.
That wasn’t the case though, as when you lift the lid on his underlying numbers, Cameron was clearly impacting games and showing his ability despite not being able to turn that into concrete goal production.
As per FotMob, his 2.37 accurate long balls per game ranked him in the top six percentile of Scottish Premiership attacking midfielders in 2025-26.
Meanwhile, his 38 successful passes and 71.2 touches per 90 placed him in the leading 7.5 per cent of his positional rivals.
Cameron also created 1.78 chances, delivered 1.35 successful crosses, won 52.9 per cent of his aerial duels and completed 50 per cent of his dribbles successfully last term, all of which ranked well above average for players in his position.
On the defensive side, he recorded 1.69 tackles, 1.02 interceptions and 4.74 recoveries per game as well, showing that he’s a solid contributor at both ends of the pitch.
Cameron could be assist king for Rangers in 2026-27
Looking back over those aforementioned stats, there’s one area of his game that really stands out as having major potential for Cameron evolving into a Rangers star: long ball accuracy.
With Lawrence Shankland now through the door, Danny Rohl is likely to deploy a front two pairing with him and Youssef Chermiti next moving forward.
If that is to be the case, then the German may well instruct his midfielders to employ a more direct approach between the lines, getting the ball up to his deadly striker pairing as quickly as possible.
Cameron being in the top six per cent of Scottish Premiership attacking midfielders for accurate long balls per game will surely catch Rohl’s attention in this regard.

Going more direct only works if you’ve got the players to accurately and consistently deliver the long ball, and Cameron has shown himself to be an expert in that field.
So, from a tactical point of view, having him in the midfield would make an awful lot of sense for Rangers in this attacking system, and it may entice a return to his previous assist numbers from his time at Dundee as a result.
