Rangers transfer decision comes clear as Anthony Patterson rivals Pierce Charles for Ibrox move

Rangers are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, and Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson is the next name to be linked with the Bears.

It’s said that the Premier League side will listen to offers for around £8million for the shot-stopper, but may want as much as £10m to let him go.

Either way, he’s been placed on the transfer list, and Gers are one of several UK sides interested in signing Patterson from the Black Cats.

Jack Butland’s future at Ibrox looks bleak. If he does stay, there is a minimal chance that he will get game time under Danny Rohl next season.

However, Rangers are also looking at Sheffield Wednesday’s Pierce Charles, whose situation is also interesting after the Owls were relegated to League One.

This is who Rangers should sign out of Anthony Patterson and Pierce Charles

Rangers are exploring a transfer for Patterson after the goalkeeper failed to achieve promotion from the Championship while out on loan at Millwall in the second half of the season.

The Englishman is good enough to be a first-team starter, but is currently behind the list with Robin Roefs in front of him as a clear favourite between the sticks.

However, Patterson’s price tag is going to cost Gers a minimum of £8m by the looks of it, and that’s a lot of money to spend on a number one.

Granted, Rohl does need a new man in goal, but Patterson is arguably already in his prime at 26.

Gers have already done their homework on Charles, and given Sheffield Wednesday’s recent financial turbulence, he should be available for much less than Patterson.

But that’s not a reflection of the Northern Irishman’s ability, as he’s one of the best in the EFL with the ball at his feet already, and has so much room to grow.

Manchester City are interested in re-signing Charles, while Gers may also have to battle with Wolves and other Championship clubs for Patterson.

They’ll have to pick their poison here, but the cheaper and better option for Rohl and the 49ers to go with is Charles, and it’s painfully obvious.

Charles can help Rangers with another signing

Charles isn’t the only Charles that Rangers are keen on signing, with the goalkeeper’s brother, Shea, of interest.

The Southampton star failed to achieve promotion with the Saints after the club was involved in Spygate, getting kicked out of the Play-off final as a result.

If Rangers were to sign the younger Charles from Sheffield Wednesday, he could help bring his brother over to Ibrox from Southampton.
