Danny Rohl has relied on the 33-year-old so far in his tenure, but he has made several mistakes, which have put his situation under the microscope.
The likes of Karl Hein and Pierce Charles have been linked with being his replacement at Ibrox, but so far nothing has materialised.
Now, an update on the future of Rangers target Hein could mean Butland’s future in Govan is secure for the new season.

What is the latest on Hein’s future?
Hein was regularly linked with Rangers last summer, but the latest update from Germany suggests that his loan with Werder Bremen will be made permanent.
A report from Florian Plettenberg on 21 May claims that the Bundesliga club have signed the Iceland star after activating their option to buy.
He states that the fee is £2.5million and he has signed a contract until 2030 with the German club.
Could Rangers still sign a new goalkeeper?
The Light Blues could still enter the market for a new goalkeeper, of course, but one less option is on the market.
That means that Butland can feel a lot more comfortable about his immediate future with the G51 outfit, if Hein is off the market.
His contract is up in 2027, though, so there will have to be a resolution shortly, so that both sides know where they stand.
It looks increasingly likely that the former Stoke City and Manchester United man will be between the sticks again for Rohl’s side in the coming season.
Some supporters would consider it to be negligence not to sign a new goalkeeper, but the Gers have so many priorities to sort out, a goalkeeper might be too far down the list for this summer.
They may wait until Butland’s deal is finished to get his wages off the books, before adding a new number one to their ranks.
It remains to be seen, but the veteran will be confident about his position at the moment.
