John Souttar finished at Rangers as Danny Rohl run-in snub continues

John Souttar will surely be on his way out of Rangers this summer, as shown by Danny Rohl‘s reluctance to play him.

The 29-year-old central defender has split opinion during his four seasons at Ibrox, with inconsistent performances being a consistent part of his Rangers story.

It could be a significant element of his Gers downfall too, as the Scotland international faces an uncertain few months in Glasgow.

Out of contract in May 2027, time is no longer on his side in royal blue, and is now surely looking at a big call being made regarding his future at the end of this season.

The upcoming summer transfer window could be Rangers’ last chance at banking a decent fee for him, and that looks likely to be the route Rohl will push Ibrox chiefs to go down with the defender.

🚨 RANGERS TRANSFER UPDATE 🚨

The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.

John Souttar hasn’t featured in Rangers’ title run-in

Having held down a regular starting role in the Rangers side until as recently as early March, Souttar has largely been resigned to a spot on the bench over the final months of the campaign.

Indeed, he’s only featured once in Gers’ last six Scottish Premiership games, and hasn’t made a single appearance in any of the post-split games either.

An unused substitute in five of the last six league games, Souttar has seen Rohl experiment with a centre-back partnership of Nasser Djiga and Emmanuel Fernandez in recent weeks.

It’s fair to say that this hasn’t really worked though, with his side now having lost four games in a row, and seen their title hopes vanish in hugely frustrating circumstances as a result.

But even despite that, Rohl still hasn’t turned back to Souttar, clearly showcasing that he no longer holds favour with the Rangers boss, which is likely not to change with new faces certain to arrive in that department this summer too.

Rohl staying on will seal Souttar’s Rangers future

However, even with Rangers’ 2025-26 season petering out in woeful fashion, and with many supporters calling for him to be sacked, Rohl looks to have the backing of the Ibrox boardroom.

As such, the 37-year-old appears to be taking Gers forward into next term, and will no doubt be backed significantly in the summer window as Andrew Cavenagh and co. look to justify their reported decision to stick with him.

Rohl staying on in the Rangers dug out is sure to be the final nail in Souttar’s Ibrox coffin, as at 29 and still in the prime of his career for a centre-back, playing the role of an unused substitute is surely not one he will hold much interest in continuing.

In truth though, it’s probably the right time for Souttar to seek pastures new, as he is a good defender on his day, but if Rangers are to be crowned Scottish champions again in the coming campaigns, they probably need better.
