Rangers get Lewis Ferguson transfer green light as asking price plummets

Rangers have been informed Lewis Ferguson is desperate to play for them again at some point in his career.

Ferguson started his footballing career at Rangers but was unable to follow in the steps of father Derek and uncle Barry as he failed to make the grade.

The 26-year-old has more than proved wrong the Gers figures who deemed he would not be good enough to make the first team.

Ferguson impressed across four seasons with Aberdeen and likewise in his four seasons at Italian side Bologna.

But the Scotland international’s agent has now shared an exciting transfer update regarding a future move to Rangers.

Rangers move one of two wishes for Lewis Ferguson

Ferguson has Rangers deep in his heart thanks to this family connections, which would have made his exit all the tougher to take.

But he clearly does not hold any grudges some 13 years on. And agent Bill McMurdo has now confirmed Ferguson would love to play for Rangers again.

“He’s maintained that from day one, that at some time in his career, he will come and play for Rangers. 100 per cent,” McMurdo is quoted as saying by the Daily Record.

“Two things he’s said to me are that he wanted to play in the English Premier League at some time, and he wants to play for Rangers at some time.”

Asked if Ferguson’s valuation could prove too much for Rangers, McMurdo added: “I think the money could be too big, but I cold be wrong.

“Last year, they couldn’t afford him because when we had Juventus and Napoli with offers on the table, they were talking about paying something in the region of €20-€25million (£17-22m).

“We have a situation now where I’ve said to Bologna this year, because of this rotational system that they have, they’ve dropped his value.

“They have to understand that because of that, his value has to have decreased to about €10-€15m (£8.6-£13m).

Ferguson’s price tag has always been an issue for Rangers, who clearly would not be able to match the previous offers of Juventus and Napoli.

However, Munro’s update suggests that fee has now plummeted to a figure the Gers could just about afford.

Indeed, the 49ers splashed out up to £10m on Youssef Chermiti last summer, so the money is certainly there.

Ferguson would tick key box for Rangers

Beyond his obvious midfield qualities, which helped Bologna end their long wait for silverware with success in the Coppa Italia 12 months ago, Ferguson also brings experience and leadership.

As captain of a fairly big club on the continent, Ferguson has led by example. He has also accrued experienced in Serie A and major European competitions.

With James Tavernier confirmed to be leaving Ibrox after this week, a massive leadership void has to be filled.

Ferguson is as close to an ideal signing as you can get, given he also ‘knows the club’ – an aspect that is often ridiculed but any ex-player will tell you its importance.

If he is gettable for £10m, this could be the deal that kickstarts better times for Rangers. If not, this has to happen a year or so down the line.
