Rangers would love John Lundstram at Ibrox now as Hull City star prepares for Wembley
Rangers would not have seen their Scottish Premiership title hopes go out with such a whimper if John Lundstram was in the team.
The 32-year-old midfielder enjoyed three excellent seasons with Rangers from 2021 to 2024, becoming a real fan favourite at Ibrox.
He was a huge part of the 2021-22 Gers side that went all the way to the Europa League final, and he also picked up Scottish Cup and League Cup winners medals too.
Lundstram was always such a reliable presence in the team, playing 48, 52 and 53 times in all competitions across each of his three campaigns in Glasgow.
But, after over 150 games in the royal blue, Lundstram left Rangers on a free transfer in the summer of 2024 following the expiration of his contract.
🚨 RANGERS TRANSFER UPDATE 🚨
The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.
How has John Lundstram fared with Hull City?
Lundstram would join Turkish side Trabzonspor that summer, but after spending just the one 2024-25 season with them, he would be on the move again.
In this season’s summer transfer window, he would seal a loan switch from Trabzonspor to English Championship outfit Hull City for the duration of the 2025-26 campaign.
| Lundstram’s 25-26 Championship stats | Result |
| Minutes played | 1,538 |
| Tackles per 90 | 2.81 |
| Interceptions per 90 | 1.70 |
| Clearances per 90 | 2.28 |
| Defensive contributions per 90 | 6.91 |
Lundstram helped convince Kieran Dowell to leave Rangers and join him at the MKM Stadium during this season’s winter transfer window too, and the pair are now on the brink of a huge achievement.
Despite being under transfer restrictions this season, Sergej Jakirovic’s Hull side are now on their way to Wembley Stadium to contest a Championship play-off final, with a place in the Premier League at stake.
Lundstram has played 29 times for the Tigers in English football’s second tier, starting 16 of those, and whilst he’s been a squad player, the veteran midfielder has proven there’s still plenty in the tank.
As per FotMob, he’s completed 4.62 accurate long balls per game in the Championship this season, which ranks him in the top 2.1 percentile of all defensive midfielders in that division this year.
Meanwhile, he’s also averaged 67.9 touches per 90, has been dispossessed just 0.41 times per game, has won 2.81 tackles per game and averaged 6.91 total defensive contributions per 90 respectively.
Lundstram’s bite and fight would be welcome at Rangers
He may never have been the most technically gifted central midfield player, but Lundstram was certainly one of the most honest, hard-working and reliable players to pull on a Gers shirt in recent times.
Rangers have just seen their Scottish Premiership title hopes vanish thanks to a three-game losing run for the first time since 2000, but if Lundstram was in this current Gers side, that surely wouldn’t have happened.
In his final 2023-24 campaign at Ibrox, he took 2,872 touches in the Scottish Premiership, played 190 accurate long balls and was part of 15 clean sheets – no player in the league that year in his position did more than him any those categories.

Lundstram also made 221 recoveries, won 57 tackles and 131 duels, as well as recording a passing accuracy of 88.5 per cent and created 52 chances respectively.
What Danny Rohl would’ve given to have a player like him in his team during this season’s title run-in.
