Rangers: 49ers irons may already be in fire as Steven Gerrard close to dugout return

Rangers chiefs 49ers Enterprises may already be working on some exciting plans behind the scenes amid Steven Gerrard‘s latest update.

Gerrard previously revealed he was very close to returning to Rangers last year, but he fell just short of putting pen to paper.

Danny Rohl was instead hired as Russell Martin‘s successor and the German made a very bright start at Ibrox.

However, Rohl’s future has now been called into question following three successive league defeats for Rangers for the first time since 2000.

And while the chatter around Rohl’s future at Rangers goes on, Gerrard has dropped a big hint that he is close to a dugout return.

Steven Gerrard could be back in work within next three weeks

Gerrard returning to Ibrox for a second spell would be a controversial call – but not necessarily the wrong one.

The manner of the Englishman’s departure from Ibrox hurt many, and still does, but he did deliver the Gers’ most recent title.

It was reported over the weekend that Gerrard is being lined up for what would be a shock return to Rangers.

And right on cue, while speaking at a Liverpool fan event in the Far East, Gerrard has now hinted a managerial return could be close – albeit he did not specify where.

“It’s a fantastic event in a couple of months’ time,” he said, as per the Daily Record. “I’m hoping to be available to come over to be a part of it. I should have a decision in two, three weeks”

Gerrard’s next job is unclear, but what is far more apparent is that he is eager to now get back into the work.

Gerrard situation has changed since last Rangers approach

Speaking towards the end of last year, Gerrard stated that his “heart was there” in terms of taking on the Rangers job.

The reason he did not commit to the job was down to the timing not being right. Reading between the lines, many put that down to tax reasons linked to his previous well-paid job.

However, Gerrard’s situation appears to have now changed and he has not hidden away from the fact that he is ready to return to the game.

Rangers are not alone in being linked with Gerrard, but returning to Glasgow would surely be masively tempting.

Gerrard made his managerial name at Ibrox before failing at Aston Villa and being forgotten about at Al-Ettifaq.

Coming back to Rangers for two or three seasons, winning some trophies and then continuing his career elsewhere sounds like an ideal pathway.
