Danny Rohl under pressure at Rangers after 26-year first with loss vs Celtic

Danny Rohl seems to have lost a section of the Rangers fanbase after losing 3-1 to Celtic in the William Hill Premiership on Sunday.

Andy Halliday believes the German manager is certainly under pressure after a third straight league loss on 10 May, something that hasn’t happened in 26 years.

While the Motherwell ace doesn’t think the Gers will sack the German manager anytime soon, there will surely be questions around his future.

The Light Blues’ performances against Hearts and Celtic were below par, and Jens Berthel Askou’s Motherwell also got the better of the former Sheffield Wednesday boss.

Rohl will undoubtedly hope to remain at Ibrox beyond this season, but it remains to be seen what Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises decide at the Govan side.

Rangers have Danny Rohl dilemma at Ibrox

Speaking on the Scottish Football Podcast on 11 May, Halliday said, “I think it leaves him under pressure essentially. I don’t think he’ll lose his job imminently, but by meaning under pressure, I think he would have lost a section of the Rangers fans. It’s not very often that Rangers lose three games on the trot domestically. It’s been 26 years since they’ve done so.

“And I think when you lose that amount of games in a row, at this stage of the season, it’s only natural that some Rangers fans are going to have their doubts. And I think it’s the manner of the last two performances in particular.”

Cavenagh got Rohl in at a time when the Gers fans had no hope of being in title contention.

Russell Martin’s tenure had left the Light Blues struggling towards the bottom half of the table and the German manager’s main goal would certainly have been to bring some stability back to Ibrox.

Finishing third seemed like the realistic goal when the former Sheffield Wednesday boss first came in, but he undoubtedly overperformed and left fans wanting more as the season progressed.

With the 37-year-old head coach’s inexperience likely playing a major role in the Govan side’s failures in recent weeks, Cavenagh now has to decide whether to stick with him or bring back someone like Steven Gerrard.

Martin O’Neill success an argument against Danny Rohl

Rohl’s only win over Celtic came when Wilfried Nancy was in charge at Parkhead.

Martin O’Neill has had the German manager’s number this season, winning thrice and drawing once in the four times they’ve met.

The argument against Rohl is that he hasn’t previously taken charge of a side where winning titles is necessary to keep his job.

It’s a bad look that the former Owls boss hasn’t been able to figure out a way of beating the veteran Celtic boss, who had been out of the game for a while before returning to Glasgow.
