Rangers have easy decision to make as Ben Davies’ return from Oxford United confirmed
Rangers will have to decide on what to do with Ben Davies, as his return from Oxford United has been confirmed.
Gers sent the centre-back on loan last summer, in hopes that he could find form in the Championship.
Oxford’s relegation was confirmed before the final day of the Championship, which suggests that the Englishman hasn’t had the best of times at the Kassam Arena.
He was last in a matchday squad back in February, and has not started a competitive game since the end of January either.
Oxford United will not be keeping Davies beyond this season, and it’s clear for Rangers to see why.
🚨 RANGERS TRANSFER UPDATE 🚨
The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.
Rangers will not renew Ben Davies’ contract
Davies had been struggling with Oxford, and never managed to make an impression when given the chance to perform.
The 30-year-old spent the entirety of last campaign with Birmingham City, as he hasn’t played for the Bears since 2024.
| Area of game | Stats |
| Matches (starts) | 10 (7) |
| Pass accuracy | 88% |
| Goals conceded while on pitch | 10 |
| Tackles | 6 |
| Duels won | 61.5% |
As seen in the table above, Davies managed just seven league starts for the U’s, and given that he struggled to play for a side that ultimately got relegated, his chances at Ibrox look slim.
The defender’s contract runs out with the Bears this summer, with his return to Auchenhowie already confirmed.
Danny Rohl will be able to get his first look at the centre-half, and area in which Rangers will be short in this summer.
However, there is no reason for Gers to hand Davies a new deal, as letting him leave at the expiry of his contract seems inevitable.
What is Davies’ market value?
It seems like Rangers only ever let Davies leave on loan this season for another club to cover his wages until his contract expired.
The 49ers probably had no faith in the former Preston North End man given what they will have been told about him last summer.
Rangers signed Davies for £4million from Liverpool back in 2022, but it just hasn’t worked for him in Glasgow.
Now, in 2026, the defender’s Transfermarkt value is around £900,000.
This further proves that even if Rangers had a one-year contract extension clause, the hassle probably wouldn’t even be worth it, as finding an interested buyer would probably be a task in itself.
