Danny Rohl must stick to what works with starting lineup as Rangers prepare for Hearts clash
Danny Rohl fielded a different team against Motherwell to the one that had been working for Rangers over their last three matches.
The German opted to utilise a two-striker formation, moving away from the setup that saw three attackers positioned behind Youssef Chermiti.
Obviously, the Gers manager no doubt had his reasons for the switch in tactics, but perhaps he also overthought his decision-making.
The Bears had been looking strong in attack over the course of their previous three games, all of which they had won.
Now, when it comes to deciding his team for Rangers’ clash against Hearts, the Ibrox manager must keep things simple and not make drastic changes.

How did Danny Rohl overthink his lineup against Motherwell?
Rohl had seemed to find a working formula at Rangers, with the Bears scoring for fun in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation.
However, against Motherwell, the German sprung a surprise by partnering Chermiti with Bojan Miovski in a 4-2-2-2 or 4-4-2 shape.
| Danny Rohl’s most used players at Rangers | Total appearances |
| Djeidi Gassama | 35 |
| Jack Butland, Nicolas Raskin | 34 |
| Jayden Meghoma | 33 |
| James Tavernier, Mikey Moore, Thelo Aasgaard | 32 |
Ultimately it was a decision that backfired, with the Gers going 2-0 down after just 25 minutes.
Rohl may be guilty of overthinking as the season begins to come to a close, as surely it was best to persist with what has been working.
Over the three previous games, the G51 outfit had scored 14 goals with only Chermiti or Ryan Naderi leading the line.
Now, with Rangers having to beat Hearts to keep their title hopes alive, Rohl could fall into another tactical trap of overthinking his setup.
But as recent weeks show, sticking to just the one striker up top has been much more fruitful. Goals win you games, and Rangers need to win this match.

However, Rangers may have more worries after the referee announcement for Hearts.
Tuur Rommens to return straight back into the starting lineup
Tuur Rommens being out injured has been a major blow for Rohl, with the Belgian offering a lot going forward.
In the previous fixture against Hearts, where the Gers won 4-2, the left-back was a real danger man for the Glasgow outfit.
On that day, he completed two key passes, created one big chance and won four out of his five duels competed in.

Overall, if the Bears want to keep their title hopes alive, they will be sweating on Rommens’ return, with the game against the Jam Tarts pencilled in as his comeback date.
However, it remains to be seen if he will slot straight back in, but if he is fit, Rohl can’t take any chances by not putting him into the action from the get go.
