Rangers fans can’t diminish the legacy James Tavernier has built at Ibrox.

The Gers captain’s glorious career in Govan will come to an end soon, with his contract expiring in May, and he’ll certainly leave as one of their greatest players.

While the right-back has rightly come under criticism for his defensive frailties at the Light Blues, there’s no denying his contribution to their success over the years with his goal involvements.

However, some fans see more bad than good in the Englishman, with one questioning whether his goals have been worth the errors at the back.

Tavernier’s future at Ibrox ultimately hinged on what Danny Rohl has planned for the 2026-27 campaign and it has now been confirmed that he will leave.

The fan went on to call the defender “captain loser”, with major criticism over his inability to win enough silverware at the Light Blues in his 10 years at the club.

In the current campaign, the right-back has continued to play an influential role at the Glaswegian outfit, scoring 14 goals and providing six assists in all competitions and dismissing that would be foolish.

Those who are against Tavernier’s contract extension at Ibrox can’t be serious if their argument hinges on forgetting what he brings to the team in an attacking sense.

Speaking on Clyde1 Superscoreboard, one fan said, “I’m just not one of these Tavernier sycophants. I think, yeah he’s done a job, but the goals he has cost us, he’s captain loser. The guy has had his time. Give him a handshake and let him go. His time is up. I won’t deny that the guy has been great when it comes to his goal tally. How many goals has he cost?”

The 34-year-old’s penalties and set-piece deliveries have been crucial for Rangers and he’s been one of the catalysts for the upturn in form under Rohl.

At one point in the current campaign, it looked almost impossible for the Gers to win the league title, but they’re now an obvious contender for it.

Regardless of what happens in Govan in May, Tavernier deserves a sending off worthy of celebrating his achievements on and off the field.
