Barry Ferguson urges new Rangers contract for Bailey Rice as talks held

Barry Ferguson believes Bailey Rice has the quality to succeed at Rangers.

The Gers icon spoke to the 19-year-old a few weeks back, who has struggled with injuries in the current campaign.

Ferguson has faith in the midfielder’s abilities and wants to see the Light Blues offer him a new deal and secure his future.

Ajax and Schalke now want to sign Rice once his contract at Ibrox expires at the end of the season, but the Glaswegian outfit have been urged not to let that happen.

Danny Rohl hasn’t seen much of Rice since the midfielder has been sidelined for most of the campaign, but the German manager should show some faith in the youngster’s abilities and convince him to stay in Govan.

Barry Ferguson knows what Bailey Rice gives Rangers

Rice put in some impressive performances under Ferguson last season and fans expected him to play a more prominent role in the current campaign.

The young midfielder started in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals against Athletic Bilbao and put in an impressive shift in the 0-0 draw.

While the Scotland Under-19 international hasn’t been able to showcase his talent under Rohl, it would make sense for the Govan side to keep him on.

With Rice wanted by Premier League clubs, it’s clear that the midfielder’s talent is being recognised by top teams in Europe.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show on 20 April, Ferguson said, “I spoke to him about four or five weeks ago. He’s been plagued with injuries this season, which hasn’t been ideal for him. I know he’s out of contract in the summer. He’s a very good player. Left-footed. He’s got everything you would want in a midfielder.

“But I just don’t know what he’s thinking. If I’m Rangers, I would try and get him signed up on another contract because I do think he’s got the ability and the quality to play at Rangers.”

Danny Rohl has Findlay Curtis example at Ibrox

Findlay Curtis is another Auchehowie talent who supporters expect great things from at Rangers, but Rohl was reluctant to give him opportunities.

With the winger now thriving at Kilmarnock, it would be foolish for the German manager not to count on him for the 2026-27 campaign.

Rice and Curtis have played together in the youth ranks and were tipped to become first-team players a few years back.

The ball is in the midfielder’s court regarding his future, but the Govan side should try to nudge him towards an extension at Ibrox.
