James Tavernier: Alex Rae hits back as Rangers captain in his Team of the Season
James Tavernier deserves to be in the Team of the Season after his 20-goal contributions for Rangers.
Alex Rae was being slightly mocked for picking the Gers’ “second choice” right-back in his Team of the Season, but he hit back, highlighting the English defender’s 14 goals and six assists in all competitions.
While Danny Rohl has preferred Dujon Sterling in his starting lineup when he has been fit, the 34-year-old captain’s influence at the Light Blues can’t be diminished.
With the Glaswegian outfit’s striker failing to score regularly, other players have had to chip in to keep their hopes of winning the William Hill Premiership alive.
Tavernier continues to have an impact at Ibrox and there’s no doubt has been a catalyst for the Govan side’s success in recent months.

James Tavernier’s Rangers teammate also in Alex Rae’s team
Rae included Emmanuel Fernandez in his Team of the Season, with the Nigeria international coming into his own after struggling at the start of the season.
The centre-back has formed an impressive partnership with Nasser Djiga in recent weeks and his aerial threat in both boxes makes him an influential player.
There’s no place for the likes of Nicolas Raskin and Mikey Moore in the team, but it has been one of those campaigns where several players have proved their worth.
| Statistics | Emmanuel Fernandez |
| Apperances | 22 |
| Goals | 5 |
| Accurate passes per game | 44.0 (88%) |
| Clean sheets | 9 |
| Interceptions per game | 1.4 |
| Tackles per game | 1.7 |
| Total duels won per game | 6.5 (69%) |
Rae had Cammy Devlin, Benjamin Nygren and Elijah Just in the middle of the park, with Tawanda Maswanhise, Lawrence Shankland and Claudio Braga up top.
Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on 15 April, Rae said, “I wish I were a second-choice right-back because I’m looking at the stats. I’ve gone pure stats here. Fourteen goals and six assists. So 20 goal involvements and the guy hasn’t played the majority of the games.”
Danny Rohl is a shoo-in for next year’s Team of the Season
Tuur Rommens has been brilliant for Rangers since signing from Westerlo in the winter transfer window.
There’s an argument that, had the left-back signed last summer, he would certainly have been in contention to be the best in his position in Scotland.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see him in everyone’s best eleven next year if he continues to put in similar levels of performance in the 2026-27 campaign.
Rohl has built a team that could go on to do what was once considered impossible and win the league title this season, which should further improve the stock of some of the players in Govan.
