Emmanuel Fernandez: Rangers have next big thing as John McGlynn lets details slip

Emmanuel Fernandez is of interest to Feyenoord and Bayer Leverkusen following his heroics for Rangers this season.

Keith Jackson has been impressed by the former Peterborough United defender’s growth since his initial struggles at Ibrox.

The Daily Record journalist believes the centre-back is catching the attention of top teams in Europe and has branded him as potentially the next big thing.

John McGlynn revealed scouts were present at Falkirk Stadium during the Gers’ 6-3 victory, possibly watching players from the Glaswegian outfit, and the Nigeria international may have been one of them.

Andrew Cavenagh will surely be delighted with Fernandez, who cost the Glaswegian outfit around £3million last summer and the Govan side will undoubtedly be confident about making a hefty profit on his sale in the future.

Rangers to face Emmanuel Fernandez summer transfer dilemma

Hotline Live host Daniel Caw expects the Gers to make a fortune off of Fernandez in one of the upcoming transfer windows.

The 24-year-old has gone from strength to strength since moving to Ibrox and the defender’s presence in both boxes arguably makes him an influential asset.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see top teams vying for the centre-back’s signature sooner rather than later, leaving the Light Blues with a decision to make over his future.

While the Glaswegian outfit would probably like to keep Fernandez for a few more years before eventually moving him on, an enticing offer may force their hand to sell.

Speaking on Hotline Live about their 2025-26 team of the season on 15 April, Jackson said, “Fernandez, self-explanatory. He didn’t start the season well, but he has become such a threat in both boxes. Defensively, a lot more secure than he was. And even when he came into the team, he was a bit problematic at the back. What he offered in the opposition box was almost impossible to defend against.”

Caw interjected, “I think he can make Rangers a fortune,” and Jackson continued, “John McGlynn let slip that the likes of Feyenoord and other European clubs, Leverkusen. People are watching. I think that’s what their eyes are on. I think people are looking at him as potentially the next big thing.”

Danny Rohl to have Emmanuel Fernandez and Nasser Djiga demand at Ibrox

Danny Rohl has brought Rangers into a position to win the William Hill Premiership title this season, something that was considered impossible just a few months back.

The German manager seems to have finally found his preferred starting lineup at Ibrox, with Fernandez and Nasser Djiga a part of it.

John Souttar appears to be struggling for confidence, which has led to the Nigerian defender and the Wolves loanee forming an impressive partnership at the back.

Rohl certainly wouldn’t want to lose Fernandez in the summer and the former Sheffield Wednesday boss may demand Djiga’s return to the Glaswegian outfit to lay the foundation for their success.
