Rangers must gamble on Andy Robertson to build winning culture under Danny Rohl

It speaks volumes that Ian Graham, Liverpool’s former data guru who wrote the best-selling book How to Win the Premier League, said Andy Robertson was one of his best signings.

Bought for just £8million from Hull City back in July 2017, Robertson has been one of the greatest defenders to have graced Anfield. But at the end of the campaign, he will leave as a free agent. With Rangers keen, they must turn the Merseysiders’ loss into their gain.

The Light Blues and Celtic are competing for his signature, according to Sportmediaset. If either of the Glasgow giants are able to snap him up, they will be adding title-winning experience to their dressing room, as well as someone capable of inspiring a squad.

Tottenham are said to be in advanced talks, but their interest is dependent on them avoiding relegation from the top-flight. That could hand the advantage to the two Old Firm rivals, although his Celtic roots could prevent him from completing a move to Ibrox.

Regardless, Rangers must continue to push to sign Robertson. The veteran could be a truly transformative addition as Danny Rohl looks to build a formidable culture in Govan.

🚨 RANGERS TRANSFER UPDATE 🚨

The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.

Why should Rangers sign Andy Robertson?

A host of clubs will be feeling very foolish right about now.

Some decided not to swoop for Robertson during the early stages of his career due to his unusual gait and unconvincing career path. He had been released by Celtic aged 15 for being too small, before he took his next steps in Scotland with Queen’s Park and Dundee United.

But when Hull City came calling in 2014, it didn’t take him long to burst onto the scene.

Fast forward to now. When examining the cold, hard data underpinning his nine-year spell at Liverpool, he is ninth in the Premier League for chances created since the start of 2017-18. Only one defender – his former Anfield team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold – is above him.

One year after leaving relegated Hull, he started in a Champions League final. The following campaign, he won the prestigious competition. Less than a decade on from his Celtic release, he had without a doubt become one of the best left-backs in world football.

Robertson also broke the Premier League record for the most assists by a defender, before being dethroned, again by his close friend Alexander-Arnold.

Clearly, then, he can talk the talk and walk the walk. In fact, he has strutted his way to a glowing reputation, one which has garnered respect from opponents. He remains an influential voice at Liverpool, and despite his advancing age, still has plenty to offer.

Reds and Scotland supporters quickly took to his passion and never-say-die attitude, and this is exactly what Rangers will be able to tap into if they win the race to sign him.

He would bring his impressive experience to Ibrox, as well as a determination to hold his team-mates to only the highest of standards. For him, nothing less than 110 per cent is good enough, making him well placed to replace James Tavernier as the de facto talisman.

Jack Butland and Liam Kelly, both goalkeepers, are the only other players over the age of 30 in the Gers’ squad, so it is clear that Rohl needs more leaders.

Robertson signing unfair on Tuur Rommens

However, the potential arrival of Robertson would force Tuur Rommens to take a step back – perhaps unfairly. The 23-year-old missed out against Dundee United and Falkirk with an injury, but could make his return in the showdown against Motherwell on April 26.

While it was expected that attacking reinforcements in the winter would salvage the Gers’ title bid, Rommens has brought a newfound thrust and energy to Rohl’s side instead. He has worked tirelessly down the left-hand side, impressing at both ends of the pitch.

Bought for a mere £3m from Westerlo, he has already repaid that outlay. Indeed, it is telling that the Light Blues have not lost a league game in which he has played, winning four and drawing two. But Rohl will also know that he remains far from the final product.

He could, therefore, benefit from Robertson’s tutelage, but this would also likely mean that Jayden Meghoma would have no future at Ibrox despite largely impressing.

On paper, Robertson is far too good a signing to turn down, especially not as a free agent. But Rohl must carefully consider the wider ramifications for his squad.

At present, there is a real togetherness and fighting spirit at the club, which has helped to reignite their title charge. Upsetting the apple cart would be a major unforced error.
