Jack Butland ‘concern’ raised as Rangers told new number one may be needed
Jack Butland has been singled out by former Rangers defender Craig Moore as a potential concern amid the Scottish Premiership title race.
The former Ibrox man is well versed in what it takes to lift the league in Scotland, having won six throughout two different spells for the Glaswegian outfit.
Danny Rohl and his Rangers side are hoping to join Moore in the folklore of title winners, as they currently sit just three points behind Hearts in first place.
The arrival of the German has turned fortunes around in Govan this season, and there is every chance they could pip the Jam Tarts to the title.
However, ahead of Rangers’ run across the league split, Moore is not feeling overwhelmingly confident about his former employers’ options between the sticks.

What has Craig Moore said about Rangers’ Jack Butland
Former Australian international Moore has put Butland under the microscope as the season begins heading towards a close after the international break.
Butland has been Rangers’ number one since the 2023-2024 season, starting in the majority of games available throughout that period.
| Jack Butland for Rangers 2025-2026 | Total |
| Save percentage | 78% |
| Goals prevented | 7.31 |
| Goals conceded | 26 |
However, while he has seemingly been good enough for his previous managers and now under Rohl, Moore believes it may be time for an upgrade.
Moore said on Go Radio: “We talk about you’ve got to be mad to be a goalkeeper and all sorts of stuff – Jack doesn’t strike me as that.
“But it’s a position where, unfortunately, you make a mistake, and you’re picking it out at the back of your net.
“I feel, unfortunately, that as good a goalkeeper as he is and the saves that he’s made and what have you, I always have the feeling there’s a big mistake in him, and that’s a big concern for me.

“What is important in our experience of winning things? A goalkeeper is an absolute must. Winning your points rather than losing your points.”
If Rohl were to change Butland between the sticks, his next option would be to play Liam Kelly. The 31-year-old recently made his second cap for the Scottish national team.
Kelly has only played on three occasions for Rangers this season as well. A change this season feels unlikely.
However, Butland’s contract talks stalling could signal a change in the near future.
Is Moore right to be concerned about Jack Butland?
Moore may have a point behind his thoughts, as Butland has been quite error-prone this season for Rangers.
Throughout the season so far, only Aberdeen’s Dimitar Mitov has made more total recorded errors among goalkeepers in Scotland.
The Dons’ shot-stopper has made two errors leading to a goal, with six errors leading to a shot. Meanwhile, Butland has made three errors leading to a goal and three errors leading to a shot.

However, it is also worth noting that Butland is second in the Scottish Premiership for goals prevented (7.31) and third for both goals conceded per match (0.8) and clean sheets (12).
So while he may have a mistake in him on occasion, the goalkeeper has proven to be a difference maker already this campaign.
