Rangers: Danny Rohl won’t repeat Philippe Clement failure as top spot eyed after two years

Rangers haven’t looked down on their competition from the summit in the William Hill Premiership for more than two years.

The last time the Gers gained top spot in the league table was on 18 February 2024 after a 3-0 win over St Johnstone, but Philippe Clement lost the advantage less than a month later on 16 March.

In the last five games of the 2023-24 season, the Light Blues won just one of their last five matches before the top-six split, eventually ending eight points behind champions Celtic.

Danny Rohl now has the opportunity to pip Hearts at the top of the table with a win over Dundee United on 4 April at Ibrox, and even if it’s for 24 hours, the Glaswegian outfit will arguably get a massive lift.

Russell Martin left the Ibrox side in a tough position after seven league games, but the German manager is now trying to do what was thought unthinkable in Govan a few months back.

Danny Rohl has built Rangers trust after impressive record

Rohl has lost just one match in the William Hill Premiership since taking over the Gers in October.

The German manager has taken charge of 23 league games at the Light Blues, winning 16 and drawing five, scoring 48 goals and conceding 17 in that time.

Clement and Rohl’s record after taking over the Gers mid-season

It has been one of those seasons where both Old Firm clubs have gone through a tough period, but the Govan side have found stability under the former Sheffield Wednesday boss.

The Jam Tarts have been leading the pack for 26 consecutive matchdays, but that could potentially change in the coming days.

Derek McInnes has done a tremendous job at Tynecastle Park and he will surely be under extreme pressure as Rohl’s team continue to be on the Jambos’ tails.

Ibrox success looks realistic despite significant handicap

Rohl will take Rangers to Spain for a mid-season training camp in April and his main priority will undoubtedly be fixing the goalscoring issues among his number nines.

Youssef Chermiti, Ryan Naderi and Bojan Miovski have arguably been nowhere near good enough for a team challenging for a title.

The Portugal Under-21 international is the top league scorer at the Gers this season, with nine, and the Light Blues are certainly punching above their weight without a centre-forward who hasn’t got double-figures in goals at this point of the campaign.

Rohl has pulled off a miracle at the Glaswegian outfit and could outdo himself by lifting silverware in May.
