Rabbi Matondo exit: Bergen find workaround for Rangers deal amid impending deadline

Rabbi Matondo will be a Brann player on Monday after completing a permanent transfer from Rangers.

Sources have told Ibrox News that the forward should be registered by the Eliteserien side on 30 March, having agreed a deal with the Wales international and the Gers.

Deadline Day in Norway is on 31 March, but the Norwegian club aren’t worried about it and the 25-year-old will arrive in Bergen after it.

It looks like Brann have found an apparent workaround to complete the winger’s move, for whom they faced little competition.

Danny Rohl will be without Matondo at the Govan side for the final stretch of the season, but the German manager didn’t really rely on him much anyway.

Rabbi Matondo deal has been a disaster for Rangers

Brann will sign Matondo on a free transfer, but the deal does include bonuses and a possible sell-on clause.

The Light Blues bought the Welsh attacker for £2.5million from Schalke 04 in 2022, with his contract at Ibrox expiring at the end of the season.

During the forward’s time in Glasgow, he’s been largely underwhelming, with persistent fitness issues hindering his game time and development.

In the Scottish top-flight, Matondo has made 41 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists.

The winger has mostly been unused by Rohl in the William Hill Premiership in the current campaign, with his most prominent minutes coming against Annan Athletic and Queen’s Park in the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup this season.

Andrew Cavenagh has further deadwood to get rid of Ibrox

Jose Cifuentes and Oscar Cortes are some of the other reminders of the previous ownership’s recruitment failures at Rangers.

The Ecuador international is currently on loan at Toronto, while the Colombian winger, who cost the Gers around £4.5m, is on loan at Huracan.

Andrew Cavenagh should look to move Cifuentes and Cortes on in the summer, with the duo arguably having no future at the Glaswegian outfit.

There are other players like Nedim Bajrami, Oliver Antman and Bojan Miovski whose futures will be worth watching closely at the end of the season.
