Rangers would make avoidable mistake by signing Tyrese Campbell after reigniting interest
Rangers have reignited their interest in Sheffield United striker Tyrese Campbell, reports claim – but they would actually do well to stay away.
According to the Daily Record, the Light Blues are weighing up moving for the frontman ahead of the summer transfer window, but they face stern competition from Celtic.
Both clubs are said to have enquired during the winter but were snubbed by the Blades, although this has not deterred them from re-entering the race.
Gers are seemingly on the lookout for more firepower and will likely muddle through until the end of the campaign before making a final decision on targets.
While Danny Rohl’s side could still win the Scottish Premiership title, they have too often been starved of creativity – and goals. However, signing Campbell would not fix that issue.

Tyrese Campbell would be bad signing for Rangers
The ace spent eight years at Stoke City, scoring 36 goals and registering 19 assists in 164 appearances in all competitions, before moving to Bramall Lane on a free transfer in 2024.
But despite being red-hot in Sheffield United’s route to the play-off final last season, Campbell’s form has nosedived this time around, making him an avoidable risk.
| Club | Matches | Goals |
| Stoke City | 164 | 36 |
| Shrewsbury Town (loan) | 15 | 5 |
| Sheffield United | 61 | 16 |
In his first year in Yorkshire, he scored 11 times and laid on two assists in 36 Championship matches, and opened the scoring in the 2-1 defeat by Sunderland at Wembley.
This season, though, the 26-year-old has netted just six times in 36 games in total, coinciding with the Blades’ alarming slump toward the relegation zone.
He has seemingly reached his ceiling, but is unpredictable when blowing hot and cold.
Rangers need someone they can hang their hat on, having already gambled on Bojan Miovski and Ryan Naderi for a combined £8.9million, and Campbell is not that man.
His deal is set to tick over into its final 12 months, but Sheffield United still hold the upper hand and would be under no real pressure to offload him this summer.
Joe Rothwell could put in a good reference for Rangers, but the club will not want to be saddled with another expensive acquisition with a questionable end product.
Why Campbell is unlikely to join
Regardless, Campbell, who was initially targeted by the Bears before Naderi was snapped up in an eye-catching Deadline Day swoop, is very unlikely to move to Ibrox.
That is because Gers have already spent big on three frontmen, recruiting Youssef Chermiti, Miovski and Naderi, and they would be reluctant to add a fourth into the mix.

Only Miovski’s spot in the squad looks at real risk, with Chermiti and Naderi certain to be given more time to find their feet, but Campbell will not want to play second or third fiddle.
Perhaps that puts Celtic in the driving seat, although judging from his unimpressive track record this season, their fierce Glasgow rivals are unlikely to be too bothered.
