Rangers could do with Joe Rothwell reference as Tyrese Campbell back on Ibrox radar

Rangers may well lean on Joe Rothwell to put in a positive word for them amid fresh links with Sheffield United striker Tyrese Campbell.

Campbell has frequently been linked with a move to Ibrox, dating back as far as 2020 when he was at Stoke City.

The 26-year-old was also touted as a target for the Gers last summer, but nothing came of that speculation.

Campbell has spent a season-and-a-half at Bramall Lane, scoring 16 goals in 61 matches in all competitions.

Amid fresh Rangers transfer speculation, the Gers may have an ace up their sleeve in former player Rothwell.

What has been said about Rangers’ fresh interest in Tyrese Campbell?

According to a report via the Daily Record on Saturday, Rangers have reignited their interest in Campbell.

Rangers are not alone in doing so, however, as fierce rivals Celtic are also scouting the 26-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window.

In fact, it is reported that both clubs made enquiries in the winter window, only to be knocked back by the Blades.

But with Campbell set to enter the final 12 months of his contract this summer, it may well be that Sheffield United decide to cash in if the right offer is made.

How could Joe Rothwell help in all this?

Rothwell spent a rather forgettable spell in Glasgow earlier this season, lasting just seven months into his three-year contract.

The 31-year-old was simply not trusted by Danny Rohl after the German replaced Russell Martin in the Ibrox dugout, and his move to South Yorkshire in early February was no surprise.

While the midfielder would have been disappointed with his lack of minutes, he would have seen first hand the passion that Rangers fans can generate.

There were no hard feelings with Rothwell, who Chris Wilder was eager to bring to Sheffield United, but rather an acceptance that some moves simply do not work out.

If Rangers really are eager to bring in Campbell, you would hope that the forward has a quick chat with teammate Rothwell.

Rothwell can explain the ins and outs, and at the same time hopefully give the Gers the edge over rivals Celtic for Campbell’s signature in the summer window.
