Nasser Djiga: Rangers at 10% disadvantage for transfer as Red Star Belgrade hold crucial sell-on clause

Nasser Djiga could be a wanted man this summer, and Rangers may face a tough battle to sign him with the centre-back’s former club, Red Star Belgrade, interested.

The Bears signed Djiga from Premier League side Wolves last summer, and after impressive performances in Glasgow, most of the Ibrox faithful would like to see him stay.

With Wolves on the cusp of Premier League relegation, there’s a good chance that the 23-year-old will want to play at a higher level than the Championship, and he should have plenty of suitors.

According to the Daily Record on Wednesday, one of them is his former side Red Star Belgrade, who are said to be plotting a move to re-sign the defender this summer.

Rangers may also want to sign Djiga, but with Red Star Belgrade already holding a 10 per cent sell-on clause, the latter may face all the cards.

How Red Star Belgrade have 10% edge over Rangers

Rangers have been backed to sign Djiga for £6million this summer, but given reported interest, it could cost more than that to keep him at Ibrox.

The Burkina Faso international started off his time at Ibrox in a bad way, but an upturn in form has seen him win the trust back from supporters.

However, with Red Star Belgrade regularly competing in European competitions, a return could look more tempting than staying at Wolves for Djiga.

Likewise, Rangers could, but with Red Star Belgrade holding a 10 per cent sell-on clause in his contract, they may be more inclined to enter a bidding war for their former star.

The contract detail means that, hypothetically, if Rangers and Red Star were to pay the same amount for Djiga, the latter would be technically bidding 10 per cent less than Gers, with that portion of the deal heading their way.

As highlighted by Sofascore, Djiga has an average 7.05 match rating in the Scottish Premiership this season, and may already be on the 49ers’ radar for this summer.

Why Red Star Belgrade may push Rangers for bidding war

If Red Star Belgrade truly want to re-sign Djiga, they may have a more seamless communication with Wolves than Rangers, given the club’s previous interactions.

But money talks, and that’s why Gers may go all out to sign Djiga once more, should he continue his current form.

That’s also why Red Star may tactically use their sell-on clause to their advantage by pushing Gers to their limits in a bidding war for the defender.

After all, whatever Rangers spend, if they re-sign Djiga, 10 per cent of it will be going to the pockets of the Red Star chairman, which is why the latter may be out to maximise further profits on the player they sold in February of 2025.
