Rangers: Why Tochi Chukwuani has been Andrew Cavenagh’s biggest masterstroke at Ibrox

Rangers ace Tochi Chukwuani has been Andrew Cavenagh’s most successful signing at Rangers so far.

Chukwuani joined Rangers in a £4million move from Austrian side Sturm Graz in January, signing a deal that will last until June 2029.

The 24-year-old helped his former side lift the domestic league title last season and has never struggled with severe injury issues throughout his career.

Chukwuani’s first impression has been positive, as he has already started eight league games under Danny Rohl.

And with Rangers firmly in a title race, Cavenagh should get a lot of credit for bringing the Dane to Govan.

Andrew Cavenagh has finally got it right with Tochi Chukwuani

The 24-year-old brings a lot more defensive stability to the Glaswegian outfit, and with their formation being so open, his presence in the starting lineup is required.

And Chukwuani has been fantastic since joining Rangers, winning 56.1 per cent of his ground duels in the Scottish Premiership so far.

According to Sofascore, he has recorded 2.36 tackles per game, which highlights how robust he has been in the centre of the park.

Rohl specifically targeted someone more physical to play alongside Raskin, and his stats from his time out in Austria show how valuable he can be.

Chukwuani has also scored three goals in all competitions for the Light Blues, with his latest coming in this weekend’s 4-1 win over Aberdeen at Ibrox.

Cavenagh has been rightly criticised for some of his signings in the summer transfer window, but the business in January was conducted with intent.

Chukwuani was the first player Rangers signed in 2026, and it’s clear that he’s been their best addition, perhaps alongside Tuur Rommens.

And the Bears will likely keep hold of him for a long time if Cavenagh sticks by his philosophy when it comes to selling players.

Cavenagh and Rangers needs to maintain current selling philosophy

The Bears have previously been known for selling key players after experiencing domestic success.

They were able to make a profit on Calvin Bassey, Joe Aribo and Glen Kamara after winning the Scottish Premiership in 2020-21.

However, the Light Blues rejected huge bids for Djeidi Gassama and Youssef Chermiti in January, which shows that Cavenagh believes his players can develop a lot more before leaving G51.

Rohl undoubtedly has a big say in the recruitment process, and it’s clear that he is aligned with how the 49ers want to run the club.

If Rangers can win some silverware this season, not only can they make even more profit on certain players, but they should be better equipped to deal with European football due to the quality of their squad.

This shows how beneficial Chukwuani is right now, but how impactful he can be for many years to come.
