Rangers: Liverpool gem Luca Stephenson tipped for Ibrox move
Rangers could be a potential next landing spot for Liverpool gem Luca Stephenson, according to Charlie Mulgrew.
Stephenson has been on the books at Premier League heavyweights Liverpool since 2018 but has yet to make a senior appearance.
However, the 22-year-old has caught the eye across a couple of seasons on loan in the Scottish Premiership with Dundee United.
The versatile midfielder, who can also play right-back, signed a contract extension at Anfield last summer before returning to Tannadice.
And with Rangers potentially in the market for a new right-back, Mulgrew has namedropped Stephenson as a possible option.

The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.
What has been said about Rangers and Luca Stephenson?
Stephenson has been used mainly as a central midfielder this season, but he has also filled in on the right, including at right-back.
The Englishman has an impressive record, having scored five goals and assisted four more in 28 league appearances this term.
| Stat | Value (2025–26 Premiership) |
|---|---|
| Appearances | 28 |
| Starts | 28 |
| Goals | 5 |
| Assists | 4 |
| Goal Contributions | 8 |
| Minutes Played | 2,472 |
| Key Passes (per game) | 1 |
| Pass Completion | 66% |
| Sofascore Rating | 6.85 |
And in the view of Mulgrew, Stephenson could slot in at either Rangers or his former club Celtic.
“Stephenson is good as well, from Liverpool. I think he could play for Rangers or Celtic,” Mulgrew said on The Breakdown podcast.
It is not clear exactly how long Stephenson has left to run on his Liverpool contract, or if indeed the Reds are even looking to cash in.
However, on the basis of Stephenson starring elsewhere in the competition, Mulgrew certainly makes sense in saying it would be wise for the Old Firm pair to at least take a look.
What is the latest with Rangers’ right-back position?
Long-serving right-back James Tavernier’s Rangers future looks very uncertain right now. Even if he does stay on for another season, he will not be around forever.
Tavernier has been rotated in and out of the side this season, with Dujon Sterling and Max Aarons also used there.

Danny Rohl will no doubt want more in that area, though, and in Stephenson he can land himself a two-in-one of sorts.
Stephenson can also play higher up, including at right-wing-back, which is also a trait managers love in a player.
This is certainly a deal that seems worth pursuing on the face of it, even on loan, with Liverpool likely to be open to Stephenson gaining further experience at a club where he will come under far more scrutiny to aid his long-term development.
