Barry Ferguson names Findlay Curtis as wildcard for World Cup squad, Rangers loanee’s selection obvious

Barry Ferguson is wrong about Findlay Curtis being a wildcard for Scotland’s 2026 World Cup squad, considering his performances away from Rangers.

The 19-year-old joined Kilmarnock on loan in the winter transfer window and has since thrived under Neil McCann in the William Hill Premiership.

After some impressive displays for Killie, the young forward has caught Steve Clarke’s eye and has been included in Scotland’s squad for the March international break.

Curtis has a bright future at Ibrox, but the winger may have a chance to make himself a regular for the national side ahead of the World Cup if he gets an opportunity to shine in friendlies against Japan and Cote d’Ivoire.

Findlay Curtis season by numbers at Rangers and Kilmarnock

Curtis got on the scoresheet for Kilmarnock, putting in a standout display against Livingston at BBSP Stadium Rugby Park on 21 March.

Apart from scoring in the 2-0 victory, the Scot completed two key passes and recorded 84 per cent passing accuracy in his 90 minutes on the pitch, as per Sofascore.

In the William Hill Premiership, the young forward has made 17 appearances this season for the Gers and Killie, scoring two goals and providing one assist.

Curtis has created four big chances in the league this season, completed 41 per cent of his dribbles and won 51 per cent of his total duels.

The young winger has shown his versatility under McCann, playing as a full-back on occasions for the East Ayrshire club.

Clarke would be wise to take someone like the teenage attacker to the World Cup, with Ben Doak only recently returning from a lengthy injury layoff.

What did Barry Ferguson say about Findlay Curtis?

Ferguson believes Clarke already has a majority of his plans set for the World Cup, with the upcoming games a chance for a few players to make a case for themselves.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show on 23 March, the Rangers icon said, “These games are for people to go and impress because I think 90 per cent of his squad is picked in his head. There’s one or two places up for grabs. We’ve spoken about Curtis; he’ll need to go and press. But you always get a wildcard, you always do get a wildcard and I think potentially it could be young Findlay.”

It’s safe to say that Ferguson may be wrong about Curtis’ Scotland prospects, with the youngster already proving that he’s ready to make an impact for the national side.

With the forward thriving away from the Glaswegian outfit, he surely will be an obvious choice for Clarke in the summer.
