Thelo Aasgaard: Rangers ace fails to make most of opportunity vs Aberdeen, despite assist

Thelo Aasgaard was handed a rare chance to start for Rangers against Aberdeen, but the Norwegian was unable to showcase why he should feature moving forward.

Danny Rohl’s side continued their push for the Scottish Premiership title with a 4-1 win against the Dons at Ibrox.

It was a crucial three points with the league split only around the corner.

On the left wing, Mikey Moore dazzled with his performance, notching a goal for the Bears to make it 2-0 at the time.

However, while Aasgaard joined Moore in adding a goal contribution, he may not have done enough to stake a claim for the right-wing role in Rangers’ win versus Aberdeen.

How Thelo Aasgaard failed Rangers test vs Aberdeen

Although Aasgaard was awarded the assist for Nicolas Raskin’s goal, the 23-year-old didn’t really know anything about it.

As James Tavernier floated in a cross, the Norway international ducked under the ball, with it bouncing off his back. Raskin would fire Rangers’ third goal in from that instance.

In truth, Aasgaard would be lying if he said he meant it, and that could ultimately overshadow what was a poor performance in general from him.

When on the ball, the Rangers player did not often look active going forward. Throughout his 73-minute appearance, he only managed to progress the ball a total of 15 metres.

In comparison, Rangers’ man-of-the-match Moore progressed the ball 169.8 metres.

Additionally, in 54 touches, he only looked to carry the ball on 13 occasions, and the Bears could have benefitted from him being braver in possession.

He also won just 50 per cent of his duels against Aberdeen, as per the Sofascore graphic below.

In the end, it was three points for the Glasgow outfit, but going forward, his lack of willingness to think forward could be an issue for Rohl.

Aasgaard needs to try and be more active in his decision-making and look to push the ball up the pitch.

Danny Rohl is not blessed with other options at Rangers

Unfortunately, Aasgaard’s replacement on the day, Oliver Antman, has not been any better across the season.

However, when he did come on, he did complete six carries in just 17 minutes on the pitch, showcasing more bravery than the Norwegian.

Additionally, Djeidi Gassama has come under criticism for his performances on the wing, with inconsistency littered throughout his displays this season.

Taken together, it becomes clear that the right-sided forward role is an area that demands significant improvement heading into next season.

For Aasgaard, he is unlikely to have made any headway in the pecking order at Ibrox.
