Robin Propper: Rangers may be regretting FC Twente transfer as defender stars in Eredivisie

Robin Propper is starring for FC Twente after leaving Rangers in this season’s summer transfer window, and Danny Rohl would probably love to have him available at Ibrox now.

Despite only joining Rangers in the summer of 2024, Propper spent just one season in Glasgow before returning to FC Twente last summer.

The experienced central defender featured prominently under the management of Philippe Clement, but following his exit and the arrival of Barry Ferguson, his role began to diminish.

And so, come this season’s summer transfer window, Propper was not in the long-term plans at Ibrox, and was able to seal a return back to Dutch football with FC Twente as a result.

🚨 RANGERS TRANSFER UPDATE 🚨

The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.

How is Robin Propper doing for FC Twente this season?

Propper’s Rangers exit did drag on in the summer, with Twente spending weeks attempting to negotiate a deal for the defender.

However, it did eventually go through, and Propper left Glasgow having been a largely disappointing signing, making just 27 total Scottish Premiership appearances for Gers.

But, the now 32-year-old centre-back has been faring much better back in his homeland this season, and in turn, may be providing cause for some Rangers regret.

Propper has made 22 Eredivisie appearances for Twente so far this season, with 20 of those being as part of the starting lineup, as his side currently sit fifth in the Dutch top flight.

As per Sofascore, Propper is registering a passing accuracy of 86 per cent in the Eredivisie, and is averaging 1.5 tackles, 4.0 balls recovered and 4.6 clearances per game this term.

He’s also made zero errors leading to goals, completed 75 per cent of his dribble attempts successfully, won 60 per cent of his ground duels and 57 per cent of his aerial duels respectively.

Propper has been excellent for Twente, in a team that also includes former Rangers striker Sam Lammers, who has scored five times and provided two assists in 18 league games this season respectively.

Propper may’ve been better option than John Souttar

Following Derek Cornelius’ injury back in November last year, Rangers have been left fairly short for strength in depth in central defence.

Emmanuel Fernandez has been superb this season, but behind him, the likes of John Souttar, Dujon Sterling and Nasser Djiga have all been fairly inconsistent this term.

Therefore, despite Propper not being the flashiest centre-back, he could’ve been a considerably more consistent performer next to Fernandez, and allowed Gers to build a concrete centre-back partnership instead of chopping and changing.

Propper is proving that he’s still got plenty to offer with FC Twente this season, and at a good level in the Eredivisie as well, and so it’s fair to say Rangers probably didn’t see the best of him at Ibrox.

So, it’s interesting to ponder just how much Rohl would like a veteran centre-back like Propper in his squad right now, as his side look to handle the pressure of a big title push.
