Rangers: Youssef Chermiti can’t be trusted after what he did vs St Mirren

Youssef Chermiti has shown he can’t be trusted as Rangers beat St Mirren 1-0 in the William Hill Premiership on Sunday.

Keith Jackson believes the Portugal Under-21 international’s price tag feels close to unfathomable after another underwhelming display at the SMiSA Stadium on 15 March.

The Daily Record journalist has accused the striker of being under the misapprehension that he can pick and choose when to put in a decent display after completing an £8million move to Ibrox from Everton last summer.

Danny Rohl has relied on Chermiti, but the 21-year-old has consistently shown this season that he can’t be trusted up front at the Glaswegian outfit.

Youssef Chermiti game by numbers in Rangers win vs St Mirren

Chermiti started his fifth consecutive league game for the Gers in Paisley and put in one of those performances that has left fans frustrated.

The centre-forward played 71 minutes before being replaced by Thelo Aasgaard, registering an xG of 0.46, taking two shots with zero on target and missing one big chance in the game, as per Sofascore.

It was disappointing to see the striker lose possession 15 times, completing just 60 per cent of his passes and completing 50 per cent of his dribbles.

The Portuguese ace was weak in challenges, winning just five of his 13 ground duels and two of his three aerial duels.

Writing in the Daily Record on 16 March, Jackson said, “Chermiti, meanwhile, turned in another one of those performances which make his enormous price tag seem very close to unfathomable.

“The one-time Everton man appears to be labouring under the misapprehension that he can pick and choose when he delivers on the expectation which came attached to his £8m transfer fee. Which means that he cannot be trusted.”

Ibrox faithful left scratching their heads with Youssef Chermiti

Chermiti has been an enigma at Ibrox, with Rohl left visibly fuming with some of the striker’s decisions in the win over St Mirren.

The former Everton ace has scored nine goals in the William Hill Premiership for Rangers, with eight of them coming against Hearts and Celtic.

It seems like the centre-forward enjoys playing against the top two teams in Scotland but can’t replicate those displays against the other sides.

Fans in Govan have every right to question whether Chermiti is good enough to lead the Glaswegian outfit to the title after another anguishing outing.
