Rangers: Thelo Aasgaard made clear starting claim in St Mirren win – here’s why

Rangers closed the gap to Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts to three points on Sunday.

It was far from an all-time classic Premiership clash for the ages between Rangers and St Mirren in Paisley on Sunday, but Gers won’t care one bit.

Danny Rohl’s side took all three points back home thanks to a well-taken 31st-minute goal from Tuur Rommens, who opened his Rangers goalscoring account in the process.

Rangers had numerous chances to run up the score, but they were forced to settle for a 1-0 win at the SMISA Stadium, as they took advantage of Hearts’ slip-up away at Kilmarnock on Saturday.

Thelo Aasgaard took his Rangers chance in St Mirren win

Thelo Aasgaard is hoping for second chance at Rangers, after losing his place in the starting XI around early February following a string of ineffective performances.

However, the 23-year-old Norwegian international is evidently a talented player, as despite falling out of favour with Rohl, he’s still registered five goals and four assists this season in his debut campaign at Ibrox.

Consistency has been a major issue for him though, and after back-to-back games against Celtic as an unused substitute, the former Luton Town man finally got his latest opportunity against St Mirren on Sunday.

In the 71st minute, Rohl called on Aasgaard to replace Youssef Chermiti, and the versatile attacking midfielder looked like a player with a point to prove, as he showed plenty of positives in his cameo from the bench.

As per Sofascore, Aasgaard completed 100 per cent of his pass attempts successfully, two of his 10 touches saw him carry the ball forward whilst also winning two of his three total duels.

He also had the ball in the net just as the clock reached the 90th minute, after Mikey Moore squared the ball for him to tap into an empty net from just inside the six-yard box.

However, VAR judged that Aasgaard was slightly ahead of the ball when Moore played it across to him, and as such, ruled it out.

That would’ve capped off a very encouraging performance off the bench for Aasgaard, who was efficient, energetic and aggressive with the ball, and surely ticked all the boxes Rohl was looking for from him.

Aasgaard should replace Djeidi Gassama for Aberdeen clash

It was a stark contrast to that of the performance of Djeidi Gassama on Sunday, who put in yet another disappointing showing in a Rangers shirt.

The 22-year-old is a player Rohl knows and trusts from their time at Sheffield Wednesday together, but the Frenchman is simply not delivering the goods at the moment, and looked miles off the pace in Paisley.

Mikey Moore also didn’t have his best game in a Gers shirt against the Buddies either, with the pair of attacking midfielders being largely wasteful in attack.

Moore has been largely excellent for Rangers in recent weeks though, whereas Gassama can’t seem to get out of the poor run of form he’s in at the moment.

He looks like a player who could do with taking out of the spotlight, and that in turn would hand Aasgaard the opportunity to step back into it, and on the basis of St Mirren, he looks ready for it too.
