Rangers: Kris Boyd says Sky Sports could go off air early after win vs St Mirren – ‘Wow’

Kris Boyd suggested the less said about Rangers’ 1-0 win over St. Mirren the better, with the former Ibrox favourite calling on Sky Sports to cut short the broadcast.

After league leaders Hearts’ surprising loss to Kilmarnock on Saturday, Rangers had an opportunity to cut the gap at the top to three points.

Nicolas Raskin appealed for an early penalty after his header struck the arm of Alex Gogic but the referee waved away the visitors’ protests.

Danny Rohl’s team took the lead in the 31st minute when Tuur Rommens guided Raskin’s dangerous cross past goalkeeper Shamal George to give them a 1-0 half-time lead.

The Gers had a number of gilt-edged chances but couldn’t take them as fears grew of a fourth successive away draw. But Rangers grinded out an uninspiring win to breathe life into their title bid.

Kris Boyd despairs over Rangers’ shortcomings at St. Mirren

Rangers, who had a late goal ruled out for offside from substitute Thelo Aasgaard, had 17 shots to the hosts’ six and mustered seven shots on target but just came away with the one goal.

Jack Butland only had to make one save, whereas George had to make five, but this was an underwhelming display from the away team.

While Raskin and Rommens produced a moment of quality for the goal, there was precious little to be positive about with the performance.

After the game, ex-Gers star Boyd quipped Sky Sports should prematurely end their TV coverage as it was such a dire contest.

Boyd also said there was a distinct lack of quality from Rangers strikers Youssef Chermiti and Ryan Naderi, with the former in particular missing a couple of big chances.

He said: “Wow, that was a tough watch. There’s so much work to be done with Rangers. There’s a lack of quality, especially in the forward area.

“That game should have been dead and buried in the first half. They shouldn’t be hanging on at the end.

“Sometimes we’re begging for added time to talk about the game but we might be able to cut this programme short and just get off air…”

What’s next for Rangers?

After Rangers’ narrow victory in Paisley, the Glasgow outfit have just three games left before the first phase of the league season draws to a close.

Two of their next three fixtures are at Ibrox, where the Gers have won nine of their 15 matches.

That record (32 points) is only the fourth-best in the division behind Hearts, Celtic, and Motherwell, while they now have the best away record in the league.

Rangers have won seven, drawn seven, and lost just once on their travels, with Celtic and Hearts just behind them on the road.

If Rangers are to win their first league title since 2021, they will need to emerge victorious in the vast majority of their remaining encounters.

Rohl is under increasing pressure at the Scottish giants, particularly as interim Celtic boss Martin O’Neill, 74, has had the upper hand over him in recent weeks.

But this win is certainly a start for Rangers.
