Rangers goalkeeper headache on cards after Jack Butland’s new admission

Rangers face a goalkeeper headache in the near future.

The Ibrox side have three senior goalkeepers on their books, Jack Butland, Liam Kelly and Kieran Wright, but all three may not be there in the near future.

The former has been Danny Rohl’s undisputed number one, making 29 appearances under the German boss.

However, a new revelation from the veteran stopper may leave Rangers boss Rohl in a tough position when it comes to his options between the sticks.

🚨 RANGERS TRANSFER UPDATE 🚨

The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.

What has Butland said about Rangers contract?

Butland revealed that he has not held talks with Rangers over a new deal with the Govan outfit, but would like to stay.

Speaking ahead of Rangers’ clash with St Mirren, he admitted he is keen to extend his time with the Light Blues beyond next summer.

He said: “No, we haven’t done.

“It’s something that’s been spoken about at times. I’ve obviously been very eager and well open to extending that.

“I don’t know. It doesn’t really come from me. I can knock on doors if I want to, but it’s not something that I’ve done.”

Why Rangers goalkeeper situation is a headache

Butland is out of contract in 2027, and if he still has not agreed a new deal by next January, he will be able to reach a pre-agreement with a new club.

Kelly, who has proven to be a solid backup when he has been called upon, will leave Auchenhowie this summer if no new deal is agreed.

Wright is also out of contract this summer, so the Gers may have just one goalkeeper in the first-team squad next season.

Given that Butland is the clear number one, and there is no debate around his place in the side, he should be offered terms as soon as possible, so that the Bears’ future in the position is sorted.

Rohl and Co need to get at least two of the current goalkeeping ranks signed up shortly, otherwise it may grow from a headache to a crisis.

Obviously, there is the possibility that new stoppers could be brought in, but there are other positions that need reinforcements, so it would be better for the Govan side to convince some of their current options to stick around.

The squad planning seems to have been all over the show in recent years, but hopefully, the former Sheffield Wednesday manager can sort it out and build a squad capable of taking the Gers back to where they belong.
