Thelo Aasgaard may be ready for Rangers second chance after Danny Rohl exile

Thelo Aasgaard is out in the Glasgow cold, as Rangers head coach Danny Rohl continues to snub the midfielder.

Signed in a reported £3.5million deal with Luton Town in this season’s summer transfer window, Aasgaard arrived in Glasgow with big expectations.

A Norwegian international and with numerous strong seasons under his belt with the likes of Wigan and Luton respectively, Aasgaard looked to be a strong acquisition to the Rangers squad.

However, ahead of Rangers’ trip to St Mirren on Sunday, the 23-year-old has played just 21 minutes of football over the last five games in all competitions, after losing his place in Rohl’s starting XI this winter.

Thelo Aasgaard could return with a point to prove for Rangers

Some already feel that Aasgaard could be moved on by Rangers in the near future after losing his place in the team, but Ibrox chiefs surely won’t be giving up on him just yet.

His five goals and four assists this season certainly point towards a good player being in there, as do his four goals from his six caps for Norway at international level.

So, as disappointing as some of his last performances were before being dropped in early February, it’s worth remembering that Aasgaard is still only 23 and deserves time to transition to the expectations of playing for a club like Rangers.

And in that regard, Aasgaard may not have lost favour with Rohl at all, rather, the Gers boss may have shrewdly decided to take him out of the firing line for a few weeks, before unleashing him once again for the run-in.

Watching on from the bench over recent games may have served to settle Aasgaard down, whilst also offering him the chance to observe, learn and gather himself so that he’s ready to go if/when his number is called again.

Who could Aasgaard replace in the Rangers team?

With no wins in their last four, Rangers supporters are getting frustrated with what they’re seeing from Rohl’s side in recent games.

That frustration was made abundantly clear in Gers’ Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic in the Scottish Cup last time out, where Rangers flung everything at the Hoops’ goal to no reward, only to be beaten on penalties.

One particular player that came out of that game with a lot of heat on his performance was Andreas Skov Olsen, with the winger yet to live up to the lofty expectations he arrived with when signing on loan from Wolfsburg this winter.

Therefore, bringing Aasgaard back into the fold for him could be a masterstroke by Rohl, and could also light a fire under Skov Olsen whilst also letting him know that he’s not guaranteed a place in the starting XI.
