Why Rangers can expect Jose Cifuentes cash windfall this summer
Rangers won’t be focusing on the summer transfer window just yet, as Danny Rohl’s side look to claim a Scottish Premiership title win.
However, Ibrox chiefs will already be planning for the summer window in the background, and it looks set to be a hugely important one.
Rohl is splitting opinion in Glasgow, with some Gers supporters feeling he’s the right man to lead the team into the future, whilst others feel as though his tactics are too risk-averse, and are costing the side points as such.
Rangers made some smart signings this winter, and are constructing the nucleus of a talented young team, but one win from their last five shows there’s still much work to be done in that regard.

The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.
Why Jose Cifuentes is set to provide Rangers cash injection
A number of fringe players were allowed to leave Ibrox in this season’s summer window, and one of those was midfielder Jose Cifuentes.
Cifuentes signed for Toronto on a season-long loan in August last year, having been unable to hit the ground running in Glasgow since joining in the summer of 2023.
The Ecuadorian international has played just 20 times for Rangers, and has been out on loan away from Gers since the winter of 2024.
Cruzeiro and Aris Thessaloniki have both sampled his talents, before the 26-year-old headed for the MLS with Toronto last summer, which runs until June 30 this year.

As part of that deal, Toronto have the option to purchase Cifuentes permanently, although it’s not currently known what that figure is.
However, Cifuentes is surely heading towards winning a permanent deal with Toronto, as he’s made an excellent start to their 2026 MLS season, and is establishing himself as a key player for them.
Starting each of their three MLS games so far, Cifuentes has been one of their best players through the early exchanges, operating in a midfield three, two and even as a number 10.
Why Rangers will be keen to get Cifuentes off wage bill
Ahead of signing for Rangers from Los Angeles FC (LAFC) in the summer of 2023, Cifuentes was one of the brightest young talents in the MLS.
Therefore, it was reported by The Scottish Sun in May 2023 that he was set to earn £11,000 a week with Rangers, with the Glaswegians evidently confident he’d be worth that sizeable investment.
However, that just hasn’t been the case for him as of right now, and so if these figures are correct, then getting Cifuentes off the wage bill permanently would open up a healthy amount of funds to redistribute elsewhere.
So, there will surely be many within Ibrox crossing their fingers that Cifuentes’ early 2026 form continues over the next few weeks, as if it does, Toronto will surely want to exercise that permanent option this summer.
