Rangers won’t have Kieran Dowell transfer regret – here’s why

Rangers commissioned the exits of a host of fringe first-team players this winter, and Kieran Dowell was one of them.

The 28-year-old had joined Rangers on a free transfer from Norwich City in the summer of 2023, and it looked to have all the hallmarks of a bargain signing for Gers.

Dowell had Premier League pedigree on his CV with the likes of Everton and Norwich, whilst he’d also performed well in the Championship with Sheffield United respectively.

However, after 18 months of inconsistent performances at Ibrox, he joined Birmingham City on loan for the second half of last season.

But, having made seven appearances in the first half of this season, Dowell signed for Hull in January of this year, joining the Championship outfit on an 18-month deal.

🚨 RANGERS TRANSFER UPDATE 🚨

The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.

How is Kieran Dowell performing for Hull after Rangers move?

Dowell made his Hull debut on 24 January against Swansea City, coming off the bench on 88 minutes, and despite only spending a matter of minutes on the pitch, was able to pick up a yellow card.

Since then, the midfielder has been largely poor in his Hull cameos, and has started just one of his eight Championship appearances for the Tigers so far, culminating in 165 minutes of league action.

Hull are sitting fifth in the Championship table, and are looking good value to secure a play-off place and a crack at Premier League promotion this term, but Dowell is yet to carve out a meaningful role at the MKM Stadium.

As per Sofascore, Dowell has created just one big chance in the Championship so far, whilst he’s also missed one big chance and is averaging 0.1 shots on target per game.

He’s also made one error that’s led to an opposition goal, won just 25 per cent of his ground duels, is yet to put in an accurate cross and is losing the ball an average of 4.3 times per game.

Rangers may still be looking for Dowell replacement this summer

With Dowell heading out the Ibrox door this winter, in came the eye-catching arrival of Andreas Skov Olsen on loan from Wolfsburg.

However, the Danish international has also put in some wildly inconsistent showings for Gers so far, with flashes of quality overshadowed by numerous performances that has seen him make little to no impact.

Rangers do have the option to turn Skov Olsen’s loan stay into a permanent one this summer, but he is going to have to show considerably more for Ibrox chiefs to feel comfortable triggering that.

Therefore, Gers look set to be on the lookout for another wide player this summer, but that won’t come with any regret over letting Dowell leave the building either.
