Why Rangers will be confident of £1.65m Oscar Cortes cash windfall – that may not be a good thing

Oscar Cortes hasn’t had the Rangers career many thought he would so far.

Signed from Lens in a reported £4.5million deal in the summer of 2025, Cortes had impressed in his fairly limited opportunities during an 18-month initial loan spell at Ibrox.

With Ligue 1 pedigree on his CV and some exciting performances in Glasgow despite having only made 18 appearances for Rangers prior to completing his permanent move, club chiefs evidently had very high hopes for the Colombian international.

However, the 22-year-old endured an underwhelming stint out on loan with Sporting Gijon during the first half of this season, before being summoned back to Ibrox this winter.

Oscar Cortes has made promising start to Huracan loan

With the winger seemingly not in Danny Rohl‘s plans either, Cortes was loaned straight back out to Argentine outfit Huracan in this season’s winter transfer window.

He’s signed on a deal for the duration of the 2026 season, which runs until December of this year, meaning the youngster isn’t due back in Glasgow for some time.

However, if everything goes well for him in Argentina, then he may not be returning to Rangers at all, as an option to buy worth up to a reported £1.65m via BBC Sport was inserted into the terms of this loan switch.

And, as detailed in the above graphic from Sofascore, Cortes has made an impressive start to life as a Huracan player, with one goal and two assists from his first eight appearances in all competitions.

Whether it’s the league, team, the fact he’s considerably closer to home or perhaps a mixture of all of those factors that’s seeing Huracan get plenty out of him, he’s certainly catching the eye over there.

Therefore, Huracan will surely be looking at his £1.65m option and thinking that there’s a bargain deal to be struck with Rangers there should his form continue into the meat and bones of their 2026 campaign.

Rangers may have given up on Cortes too soon

Cortes’ Rangers signing always came with the caveat that he was a raw and unrefined talent, but the £4.5m fee was a clear indication of how much belief Gers had in his potential.

So, allowing Huracan to have a reported option to buy at a maximum of £1.65m was a risky move by Ibrox decision-makers, and now it appears that might’ve backfired.

If Cortes can keep performing and developing in 2026, then not only will Huracan surely run to the phone to trigger that option to buy with Rangers, but they may already be in line to bank major profits on him too.

Rangers made a significant investment into Cortes last summer, but they may well live to regret the day the signed off on the terms of this loan deal.
