Rangers fans being gaslit after Chris Sutton’s phenomenal Youssef Chermiti claim
Danny Rohl will feel vindicated after keeping faith in Youssef Chermiti at Rangers.
The Portugal Under-21 international has come up with some big goals for the Gers, scoring a magnificent brace in the 2-2 draw against Celtic in the William Hill Premiership on 1 March.
Fans in G51 were forced to eat their words as the centre-forward scored a hat-trick against Hearts, with the Light Blues getting three points at Ibrox in the 4-2 victory.
There were calls for Rohl to drop the striker from the starting lineup before Derek McInnes’ team visited Govan, but the German manager’s faith in the former Everton youngster has undoubtedly been repaid in recent weeks, although some may be going overboard with their assessment of his season.
Chris Sutton hails Youssef Chermiti after Rangers draw vs Celtic
Chris Sutton has claimed Chermiti has had a phenomenal season so far after his two goals against Celtic.
While there may have been some unwarranted criticism of the 21-year-old due to his £8million price tag at Ibrox, it feels like the Gers fans are being gaslit about the striker’s displays.
It’s encouraging to see the centre-forward score eight of his nine goals in the William Hill Premiership against Hearts and the Hoops, but that’s precisely where the problem lies.
Supporters haven’t seen anywhere near the same quality from Chermiti in games in which the Light Blues are considered favourites to win.
While Rohl has brought consistency to the Glaswegian outfit’s domestic displays, the Portuguese striker has been unreliable up front.
Speaking on The Warm Up on 2 March, Sutton said, “While we’re all panning him because Rangers were hopeless at the start of the season, for him to score the quality of goals in big games which he has done, I think all things taken into account, he’s had a phenomenal season.”
Ibrox faithful witness changing goalposts for Youssef Chermiti
It isn’t wrong for Rangers fans to have expectations from Chermiti to score over 20 goals in the league.
The young striker was brought in to replace Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane’s influence at the Gers, who led the goalscoring charts in the previous campaign.
| Competition | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| William Hill Premiership | 21 | 9 | 2 |
| Europa League | 8 | 0 | 0 |
| Premier Sports Cup | 2 | 0 | 0 |
James Tavernier has scored the most goals for the Light Blues this season, which goes to show the lack of quality they’ve had up front for the majority of the season.
It seems like the goalposts are changing on what Chermiti must do to be considered a success and supporters will certainly be wary of making any positive judgments yet.
