‘I previously managed Rangers, what fans are saying about Danny Rohl is outrageous’

Ally McCoist has called out Rangers fans who are being critical of Danny Rohl after the 2-2 draw against Celtic on Sunday.

The Gers icon thinks it’s outrageous that supporters in Govan are being critical of the German manager after what he’s done this season, as the Hoops came back from two goals behind in the Old Firm derby on 1 March.

McCoist, who managed the Light Blues between 2011 and 2014, believes that what the former Sheffield Wednesday boss has been able to do after replacing Russell Martin must be taken into consideration.

The perspective on the 2025-26 campaign has to feature where the Glaswegian outfit were at the start versus where they are now, challenging for the William Hill Premiership title.

Danny Rohl concern justified after what Rangers have done

Rohl has turned things around on the domestic front for the Gers, but their Europa League form saw no change after Martin’s exit.

While the German manager has lost just once in the league this season, he managed just one win from his six games in Europe after taking over at Ibrox.

There have been concerns around Rohl’s inability to dominate the big games, with the Old Firm derby a game of two halves after Youssef Chermiti’s brace.

Apart from the 4-2 win over Hearts in Govan, there aren’t many games that come to mind where the Glaswegian outfit have been at their vintage best for 90 minutes.

While the 36-year-old head coach deserves credit for bringing the Light Blues back from an impossible position in the league, the final part of the campaign is where he will be judged.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 3 March, McCoist said, “I even hear Rangers fans at the moment being slightly critical of the manager, which I think is outrageous. Of course, you’re open to criticism, I get that. But that fella has taken Rangers from second or third bottom of the league to all of a sudden people are talking about a chance of winning the league. So let’s put that into perspective.”

Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers have clear expectations of Danny Rohl at Ibrox

Rohl was backed in the winter transfer window with the signings of Tuur Rommens, Tochi Chukwuani, Andreas Skov Olsen and Ryan Naderi.

Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises had already had a net spend of over £20million last summer and put their hands in their pockets once again for the German manager.

The American ownership must have clearly had expectations from Rohl to take Hearts all the way in the William Hill Premiership.

After the Light Blues’ recent slip-ups, doubts have emerged over their credentials as title challengers, and it will be interesting to see what the coming months bring in Govan.
