Ally McCoist reveals what Youssef Chermiti has to do to win him over at Rangers – ‘Let’s not get carried away’

Ally McCoist still isn’t completely sold on Youssef Chermiti at Rangers.

The Portuguese striker joined the Gers in the summer from Everton and was met with dubious reviews from the Ibrox faithful.

He has managed to win many over with his heroics against Celtic and Hearts this season, with the forward netting another two in Sunday’s Old Firm draw.

Despite that, Govan icon McCoist still wants to see more from Chermiti and has revealed to talkSPORT what he needs to do to truly succeed with Rangers.

He said: “By the way, there is still a long time to go. He’s scored a couple of goals in the Old Firm, twice, and the first one yesterday was out of this world.

“But do you know something, if you play upfront for Rangers, you’ve got to score the only goal of the game at Livingston or score in a 2-1 victory away at Motherwell. That’s what you’ve got to do as well. Let’s not get carried away.”

Ally McCoist rightly sceptical about Youssef Chermiti

It’s clear that the jury isn’t completely out on the summer signings, even after his stunning bicycle kick against the Hoops.

The 21-year-old converted Andreas Skov Olsen’s cross with aplomb and sparked wild scenes in the stands at Ibrox that fans won’t forget for a long time.

That shouldn’t cloud the vision of Chermiti, who hasn’t always performed at his best level outside of clashes with Celtic and Hearts.

He has scored nine goals in the Scottish Premiership, and eight of those have come in four fixtures against those two title challengers.

His only other strike came in the 3-1 win versus Kilmarnock, which sums up exactly the point McCoist is making about not getting carried away.

How Chermiti prove himself to McCoist at Rangers

There are nine Scottish Premiership games to go, and that could give the Portugal under-21 international the perfect chance to showcase his talents.

Pre and post split, Danny Rohl is going to need some key performances from the number nine as the title race heats up.

Upcoming clashes against the likes of St Mirren, Aberdeen and Dundee United could represent the perfect chance for Chermiti to shine, with wins needed in every game now.

If he can get amongst the goals and help the Light Blues to win games, there will be little negativity to aim in his direction.

McCoist wants the striker to shine at Ibrox, but needs convincing of his consistency outside of massive moments in big games.
