Rangers have perfect chance to ram Luke McCowan’s words right back down his throat

Rangers have the chance to hit back at Celtic’s Luke McCowan immediately, as they take on their Glasgow rivals on Sunday.

Celtic bowed out of the Europa League on Thursday, despite beating VfB Stuttgart 1-0 on the night.

Wideman McCowan scored the only goal at MHP Arena, less than a minute into the clash.

Though the 4-1 lead taken at Celtic Park a week before would see the German outfit progress to the last 16 of the competition.

Rangers welcome Celtic to Ibrox on Sunday for a defining clash at the top of the Scottish Premiership, before they welcome their rivals once again a week later for a huge Scottish Cup quarter-final.

Luke McCowan makes big Celtic claim – Rangers have to hit back

It has been a massively under-par year for Celtic, with Rangers having the chance to put a huge dent in their title hopes, before knocking them out of the cup a week later.

However, McCowan took the chance to make a big claim following Celtic’s away win in South Germany.

Speaking in the mixed zone, the winger said: “I think it’s about putting on a good performance that can lead to a good result.

“We know if we are at it, nobody in the league touches us, and we need to have that mentality going in.”

Celtic find themselves sitting third in the Scottish Premiership heading into the weekend, and ideally need to beat Rangers to keep any serious title hopes alive.

But for Rangers, they simply have to take the chance and hit back at Ibrox.

After a dismal start to the campaign under Russell Martin, Rangers have fought back sensationally under Danny Rohl, and are set for a big title showdown in the coming months, with just four points separating themselves and league leaders Hearts.

What did Danny Rohl say after big McCowan claim?

After McCowan’s comments, Rangers manager Rohl responded equally as boisterously.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of Sunday’s derby, the German said: “I think at the moment we are in the second position, they are behind us.

“I think in general it makes no sense to speak too much about the other side; we have to focus on ourselves,” he added.

“We want to win this game. I see my team is ready to take points, and then we’ll see on Sunday, hopefully both teams try everything and I’m confident that we have a big chance of winning this game,” concluded Rohl.

With Celtic carrying a game in hand, a Rangers win on Sunday would see them escape outside of touching distance, while importantly, huge levels of confidence will be given ahead of Sunday’s cup tie.

It is imperative that Rangers hit back at McCowan, and set themselves up for a late season title charge.
