Thelo Aasgaard could be done at Rangers already after latest Danny Rohl change

Thelo Aasgaard’s Rangers career certainly hasn’t gone to plan.

Aasgaard joined Rangers from Luton for £3.5million in the summer, yet the attacking midfielder has struggled to make an impact at Ibrox.

Although the Norway international has a lot of potential, he has only scored five times in all competitions since his arrival in Govan.

And given Rohl’s latest tactical change, Aasgaard might not feature in the starting line-up for quite some time.

No place for Thelo Aasgaard in Danny Rohl’s best Rangers XI

Ultimately, the 23-year-old has thrived playing in midfield for the majority of his career, impressing at both Wigan and Luton in the EFL before making the move to Govan.

However, he hasn’t shown enough promise to justify starting every week, and if Rohl persists with two strikers, there will be no place for him in the team.

According to Sofascore, he has completed 71.4 per cent of his dribbles and has a pass accuracy of 85.5 per cent.

However, in the 4-2 win over Hearts on 15 February, Rohl opted for a 4-2-2-2 formation, with Mikey Moore and Andreas Skov Olsen on the flanks and Ryan Naderi alongside Youssef Chermiti up front.

Last Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Livingston saw the German head coach return to using one striker, with Moore playing centrally.

Both games have shown that Aasgaard isn’t valued in the starting line-up, and he needs to pray for a miracle if he wants to be considered regularly again.

Of course, the 23-year-old could play on the left wing, but it’s clear that his underlying numbers aren’t satisfying Rohl.

Why doesn’t Rohl trust Aasgaard?

Whether Rangers play with a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-2-2-2, Aasgaard will look completely out of place, and there are far better options Rohl can choose from.

He has only created 18 chances in the Scottish Premiership, while being dispossessed of the ball 20 times.

His expected assists total of 1.46 is far from productive, and the bottom line is that he doesn’t impact the game enough when he is on the pitch.

What doesn’t help is Rohl changing his formation frequently, and the German head coach might be feeling pressure to start some of his squad players.

But it’s clear that Aasgaard can’t do the fundamental basics that Rohl expects of his players, and his signing is becoming more and more of a failure with each week that passes.
