Aberdeen will want to pursue permanent deal for Rangers’ Lyall Cameron – here’s why

Rangers sanctioned transfer exits for a number of fringe players this winter, with Lyall Cameron one of them.

Signed from Dundee on a pre-contract agreement in February 2025, Cameron arrived at Rangers with the potential to be a real bargain capture.

The versatile midfielder had enjoyed three excellent years in the Dundee first-team between 2022-2025, making well over 100 appearances and scoring over 30 goals.

Indeed, in his final season at Dens Park, the Scotland youth international bagged 14 goals and provided 11 assists in 41 total appearances, and so to secure his signature on a free transfer looked a highly shrewd move by Gers.

Lyall Cameron is playing well at Aberdeen

However, after making just 10 appearances in all competitions for Rangers during the first half of this season, the 23-year-old didn’t hit the ground running at Ibrox.

And so come mid-January this year, and with limited action under both Russell Martin and Danny Rohl respectively, Cameron was allowed to seek a loan move away from Glasgow.

Aberdeen would be his destination, signing on loan for the remainder of the season, but not after their sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel was reported to have pushed for a permanent deal or to have a permanent option included in his loan deal.

Neither of those happened though, and Cameron moved to Pittodrie on a straight loan, and the midfielder has been having some success under interim boss Peter Leven.

As per Sofascore, Cameron is recording an impressive long ball accuracy of 66.7 per cent for Aberdeen, whilst he’s also made zero errors leading to goals.

Despite the fact he’s not yet been able to provide a goal contribution, the young midfielder has come close on numerous occasions, and has been praised by Dons fans for his encouraging early performances.

Cameron doesn’t seem assured of Rangers first-team role

Having signed Tochi Chukwuani this winter, Rangers have further bolstered their options in the middle of the park.

And with Connor Barron still to return from injury to reinforce a group that already included Nicolas Raskin, Mohamed Diomande, Thelo Aasgaard and youngster Bailey Rice, there is plenty of competition in the Rangers engine room.

Therefore, Cameron may see the starring role he’s developing into at Aberdeen as one that he doesn’t want to give up, as he wouldn’t be guaranteed minutes at Ibrox as things stand.

So, the Dandies may well feel confident that they can strike a permanent agreement for Cameron this summer, and with Rangers having signed him on a free, they may not be against turning round a quick profit either.
