Liam Kelly’s contract situation: Here’s everything Rangers fans need to know

Liam Kelly is one of a number of Rangers players who are set to be out of contract in the summer.

Kelly has featured just three times this season, with both Russell Martin and Danny Rohl keeping Jack Butland between the sticks most of the time.

While he has not had much gametime, he is a valuable member of the squad because he has shown that he can step in and hold the fort when the starter is dropped or injured.

His current Ibrox deal is set to expire in three months, and he will be free to join a new club, unless a new agreement is reached.

What is Kelly’s current situation at Rangers?

Kelly signed a two-year deal after joining the Gers on a free transfer in June 2024, and it is set to run out on 31 May.

A report from the Daily Record on 20 February claimed that the Light Blues are planning to start talks with the 30-year-old.

It states that the Auchenhowie club want to extend him and keep Butland‘s backup at the club beyond the expiry of his current contract.

What has Kelly said about the situation?

Kelly has admitted that he would happily remain with the Gers, despite the fact that he is firmly behind the Englishman in the pecking order in Govan, and there is no sign of that changing.

Speaking ahead of the Scottish Cup clash with Annan Athletic in January, in which the Gers won 5-0, he said: “I’ve been here for the majority of my life, it’s 16 years out of my 29 years, I’ve been here at Rangers, so I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t be keen to stay on.

“I love being here, I love being a part of the club. I know how it feels growing up when you win a lot of games coming through the academy, how it feels to be a Rangers team winning.

“So I’ve got a rough idea of how that looks, and if I can try and help make the boys aware of that and the magnitude of the club, the expectations, the responsibility we have to hundreds of thousands of people, I try to do that every single day, every single matchday.

“If I’m only able to do the next six months, it’s been amazing. I’ve loved my time. If it’s for years to come, then great.”

Why an extension is the right move for everyone

Kelly is probably the best backup goalkeeper that the Light Blues could get, and he may well be happy to spend time on the bench, given his association with the club.

He is a boyhood Gers supporter and spent 14 years in the academy, so he is surely living the dream right now, and he is still getting into Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad.

Perhaps, he would not be comfortable sticking around if that was not the case, but he looks set to go to the World Cup this summer, regardless of whether he is playing or not.

Therefore, an extension makes sense for all parties, and it looks like it may be on the cards in the near future.
