Rangers tipped to make Brentford approach over Jayden Meghoma deal after Tuur Rommens development

Andy Newport believes Rangers must approach Brentford to keep Jayden Meghoma at Ibrox next season, despite Tuur Rommens’ impressive performances.

Meghoma was signed on loan from the Premier League club in the summer, but his inexperience at the top level has been clear to see.

Rangers needed another option on the left flank of defence, and that is where the winter signing of Rommens has come into play.

However, Newport believes the 19-year-old has been showing signs he can be a useful player and should stick around to compete with the Belgian defender.

Speaking on the Daily Record’s Rangers podcast, Newport said: “I think we all agree he’s [Meghoma] done a decent job given his level of experience and what he was thrown into. I think he’s improved as the season has gone on.

“I still don’t think it would be a bad shout to ask the question of Brentford about bringing him back to compete with Rommens next season, but you’ve definitely seen a step up.”

With Meghoma’s loan having no option to buy, the 49ers and Danny Rohl will need to decide whether they want to try and keep him around or go with another option.

The Brentford loanee was a signing made by former manager Russell Martin, who had previously worked with him at Southampton.

While Newport wants Meghoma to stay beyond this season, the journalist has also admitted there are parts of his game that need improvement.

He believes the Brentford loanee is often a target for opposition sides, as they look to exploit his lack of physicality.

Newport said: “[Meghoma’s] not someone you’d immediately describe as physically strong. He can be bullied at times and outmuscled.”

The Daily Record journalist has been left highly impressed with new signing Rommens, who he has described as an “absolute specimen”.

If the Bears are to win league title number 56, the winter signings will certainly play a key role in that success.

Rohl has managed to get in players who fit into his style of play, rather than solely working with those brought in by his predecessors.

How likely is Meghoma to stay at Rangers?

A price for Meghoma has not been floated about, but after Brentford spent £10million on securing his signature in 2024, you would suspect they would now be looking for more.

Meghoma has plenty of years left on his contract, signing a four-year deal with an option of a further two years at the time.

However, according to Transfermarkt, the Englishman is only valued at £650,000. As stated, it would be unlikely for Brentford to do a deal at such a low price.

Rangers could, of course, go and ask for another loan next year, which the Bees could be open to doing.

The Gers could run into one key issue, though, as left-back Rico Henry is out of contract, and Keith Andrews could instead opt to keep Meghoma as a cost-effective replacement.

Meghoma’s future at Ibrox is certainly up in the air following this campaign.
