Everything we know about James Tavernier’s Rangers contract: Update on talks, wages and more
James Tavernier is approaching the end of his Rangers contract.
The 34-year-old has been a stalwart at Ibrox for over 10 years and has played a key role under several different head coaches.
Danny Rohl has continued to utilise the right-back, although his minutes have been shared more frequently with Dujon Sterling.
The Englishman still represents a role model in G51 and is one of the Light Blues’ best-ever signings after 556 appearances since his move from Wigan Athletic in 2015.
There are now questions over a new deal in Govan, and Ibrox News rounds up everything we know about Tavernier’s contract situation.

What is James Tavernier’s current contract situation at Rangers?
Three years ago, the Gers agreed a deal with the full-back to keep him until June 2026 after plenty of links away from Govan.
There was plenty of interest from English Premier League sides, but the defender opted to stick around at Ibrox just a month after the Europa League final defeat to Frankfurt.
That deal is now set to come to an end, with the end of the current Scottish Premiership season marking the expiry of his current contract.
As part of that, Tavernier earns a reported £30,000-per-week which has been a feature of his agreement since signing in 2022.
Rangers reported top earners:
- James Tavernier – £30,000 p/w
- Jack Butland – £25,000 p/w
- Bojan Miovski – £23,000 p/w
- Rabbi Matondo – £23,000 p/w
- Dujon Sterling – £22,000 p/w
- Youssef Chermiti – £21,000 p/w
That has seen the Englishman earn a base salary of £1.4million a year across his current deal, but that is set to change moving into the new campaign.
There will now be questions over whether it is right for him to pen a new contract with Rohl, with discussions likely to continue as the end of the campaign nears.
Tavernier could face struggles in his Rangers contract talks
The skipper may be a stalwart at Ibrox, but his future in G51 isn’t a guarantee right now.
With his contract ticking down, he will have to wait for discussions to begin with the Light Blues, with the ball firmly in the Govan club’s court.

That is especially the case with Pete O’Rourke reporting via Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast that Tavernier’s age and squad status could hamper his hopes of signing a new deal.
The Englishman is said to want his career to end at Ibrox when he retires, but his current standing may have a negative impact on that possibility.
That could open him up to the possibility of a free transfer exit in the summer, but there have been calls to tie him down to a new deal rather than letting him go.
