Everything Rangers fans need to know about fresh Todd Cantwell return speculation as transfer update emerges

Rangers have been linked with a move for former midfielder Todd Cantwell – 20 months on from his exit.

Cantwell joined Rangers from Norwich City in January 2023 and went on to score 14 goals and add 12 assists in 64 matches in all competitions.

The former Bournemouth loanee secured the Ibrox side the Scottish League Cup in 2024 before leaving for Blackburn Rovers in the Championship in August 2024.

Amid their struggles to stave off relegation to League One Sports Boom reported that Wrexham and Derby County are interested in the 27-year-old.

Moreover, the football news website adds that Rangers boss Danny Rohl is “keen” on Cantwell and is ready to push the Scottish giants to move for the attacking midfielder.

Todd Cantwell to Rangers return seems far-fetched

Blackburn sit 20th in the Championship, just two places and three points above the relegation zone. Rovers have been trying to extend Cantwell’s contract, which runs until the summer of 2027, but for the time being, it doesn’t look like a new agreement will be forthcoming.

Both Wrexham and Derby are pushing for promotion from the Championship, two teams geographically not too far from Blackburn, which would make a switch for Cantwell more convenient.

But a return to Rangers seems remote. Going by fans’ reactions on social media, a second Cantwell spell at Rangers would not be a popular move.

Indeed, he submitted two transfer requests after a falling out with then-manager Philippe Clement, which didn’t go down too well with supporters.

He later said his time at Rangers had been “twisted”, with Cantwell adding he was “desperate” to clear up the claim that he didn’t want to play for the Gers again – something he refutes.

Now that Rohl is in charge, a Rangers return may seem more tempting. For the time being, Rangers have Mikey Moore and Andreas Skov Olsen as attacking midfielders in a 4-2-2-2 formation.

But they are on loan from Tottenham and Wolfsburg, respectively, so permanent deals may be unlikely. However, for everything that has come before with Rangers and Cantwell, it seems a Gers reunion is far-fetched.

Why Danny Rohl could lead Rangers to the league title

When Russell Martin was sacked by Rangers in early October, the Gers were eighth in the Scottish Premiership, with Celtic and Hearts way out in front.

But in recent months, Rangers have been on an excellent run of form under former Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl, who has seamlessly transitioned to Scottish football.

After their stupendous 4-2 comeback win over Hearts in the league last Sunday, Rangers are now within two points of the summit.

Celtic are a point back in third but have a game in hand over their bitter rivals as we head into the final third of the season. Rohl struggled to make a mark in Europe this season but in the Scottish top-flight, the German is proving his worth.

His tactical flexibility and in-game management has, more often than not, led to Rangers becoming the form team in the division.

Celtic caretaker boss Martin O’Neill is 73 and was out of management for six years and Hearts have not been in a situation like this for decades. With Rohl at the helm, a first league title since 2021 is very much a possibility for Rangers.
