Scottish Premiership title-winners’ average points tally over last decade and whether Rangers can match it

The Scottish Premiership finishing line is coming into view, and Rangers are hoping to cross it in first-place.

Danny Rohl was tasked with turning round a squad left absent of confidence and belief, and to re-energise a disillusioned fanbase following Russell Martin’s short reign, and that’s exactly what he’s done.

Rangers now sit second in the Premiership table, just two points behind leaders Hearts following Sunday’s brilliant 4-2 win over Derek McInnes’ men at Ibrox.

So, with just 11 games to go in this enthralling 2025-26 Premiership season, it looks set to go right down to the wire between Hearts, Rangers and Celtic to decide who is crowned champions this year.

But, how will whoever lifts the trophy this term stack up against the average points tally from each winning season over the last 10 years?

What is the average points required to win the Premiership in last decade?

Not that Rangers fans will want/need reminding of this, but starting from the 2015-16 season, Celtic have won the Premiership title every year besides 2020-21, when Gers were last crowned champions.

It’s been a tough decade for Rangers fans as such, but with Rohl now at the helm, things definitely look to be changing at Ibrox for the better.

So, if Gers do go on to win the league this season, will they have done so by matching or even bettering the average points total needed to win the Scottish top flight since 2015-16? Let’s find out.

Adding up all of the individual points tallies from the last 10 seasons brings up a total figure of 920, which if we then divide that number by 10, give us the average number of points needed to win the Premiership in the last decade: 92.

So, with Rangers currently sitting on 55 points with 11 games to play, the maximum points tally they can finish on this season is 88.

And with Hearts only capable of reaching a maximum number of 90 points this term, that means whoever wins the league this season will be a below average side compared to title-winning teams’ points over the last decade.

Rangers have to take advantage of favourable run-in before split

Gers have six games to go before the Premiership splits, and they must take full advantage of the fixtures they’ve got in that period.

Four of those six matches will come against sides currently placed in the bottom half of the division, with just Celtic (H) and Falkirk (A) the only two games they will play against teams currently sat in the top half.

Livingston (A), St Mirren (A), Aberdeen (H) and Dundee United (H) are Gers’ other four fixtures before the split, and Rohl will be licking his lips at this favourable schedule on paper.

However, we all know that football isn’t played on paper, and it may now be at the stage of the campaign where it’s not so much who you play that makes the difference, but which side handles the pressure better.
