Kris Boyd outlines next step for Danny Rohl and Rangers – it includes Tuur Rommens

Tuur Rommens has made a brilliant impact under Danny Rohl at Rangers.

Rommens joined the Light Blues from Belgian outfit Westerlo for £2.6million in January, with another £500,000 due in performance-related add-ons.

After showing bright signs on his debut against Kilmarnock, the 22-year-old had to wait until Sunday to get his first Scottish Premiership start.

The Sofascore graphic below shows how well he played in the 4-2 win over Hearts at Ibrox, and he has certainly claimed the left-back spot with conviction.

After his impressive performance, Kris Boyd believes he could play a key role in helping Rangers reach a higher level by making more crosses from advanced positions.

Rangers need their full-backs in much higher positions

Against Hearts, Rommens was a constant threat down the left-hand side, and he created two chances during the game.

Although he has a lot of time to develop, it was clear to see that Rohl sees him as an instant upgrade to his squad to provide competition to Jayden Meghoma.

Speaking on the Go Ballistic podcast on 16 February, Boyd believes that the Belgian left-back can help Rangers reach another level under Rohl.

He said: “I think [Jayden] Meghoma has actually done well for Rangers, but there’s no doubt that Rommens is a powerful addition.

Rommens’ Scottish Premiership stats since joining Rangers

“He runs with purpose, and he was always an option for Rangers in possession.

“I’d imagine the next step for Rangers is figuring out how they can get their full-backs 10 or 15 yards up the pitch to deliver more crosses into the box.”

It’s clear to see in the table above that although he has a lot of energy, he isn’t getting into enough crossing positions.

This is through no fault of his own, and if Rohl can make changes to his tactics to allow the wing-backs to get higher up the pitch, then Rommens will reap the rewards.

And the same can definitely be said for Dujon Sterling or James Tavernier at right-back.

Dujon Sterling can’t provide the same attacking threat as James Tavernier

Sterling is certainly a better defensive option than Tavernier, but he isn’t well-versed when going forward.

He didn’t form a great partnership with Andreas Skov Olsen against Hearts, and Tavernier may feel that he is better suited to the team, as proven when he came off the bench.

The 34-year-old is the joint-top scorer for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership with seven goals, and he has proven over the last decade that his deliveries from out wide can cause havoc in the opposition box.

The captain has an attacking mentality that is unique, which means Rohl should recognise this and start him for most of the big games.

If he does so, then the Bears could elevate their performances to another level.
