John Souttar’s contract set to expire: Update on talks, what he earns and more

John Souttar is one of several Rangers players who are out of contract in the summer.

Souttar has been a key player for Danny Rohl when he has been fit, with a muscle injury forcing him to miss nine games for club and country.

The 29-year-old has made 33 appearances for the Ibrox side this season, picking up 10 yellow cards in the process.

His contract situation is still up in the air, with just three months left until it expires, and he is free to join a new club, which the 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh are surely keen to avoid.

How are Rangers talks going with Souttar?

Souttar’s current deal, which he signed when he joined on a pre-contract agreement in 2022, runs until 31 May.

The latest update on talks over a new deal for the former Hearts star was in December, with reports that the Gers had offered him a new deal.

The Scottish Sun claimed on 8 December that Souttar was offered a two-year contract that would keep him at Auchenhowie until 2028.

It stated that the 21-cap Scotland star would receive a significant pay increase as part of the fresh terms, but there has been no confirmation that he has signed yet.

How much does Souttar earn at Rangers?

Souttar is understood to earn around £12,000-per-week with the Gers, which does not represent how important that he is to the side.

The idea of a wage increase is not that unfathomable, given that James Tavernier, whose contract also expires in the summer is believed to be on nearly £40,000-per-week.

Given the Scotland ace’s status within the squad, surely the bumper pay increase will be part of a new deal, if he signs.

What has Danny Rohl said about Souttar situation?

Rohl wants to keep Souttar around in Govan, and he has publicly spoken about his contract situation.

The former Sheffield Wednesday manager highlighted the importance of having experienced players, like the Scottish international in the squad.

Speaking ahead of the clash with Ferencvaros in December, he said: “Since I have been here, John has been one of the core members of the team. He has helped us.

“He has experience in this league, he knows what it means to play Saturday to Thursday, he knows how to play at places like Kilmarnock.

“This is important because he knows what it means to play for Rangers.

“We need a core of the group, we need leaders who have experience, you can build young players around them.

“Let’s see what direction it goes, there has been a clear signal from our side.”

Whether he signs a new deal or not is still not certain, but Rohl clearly does not want to lose one of his most important players.

It would be a big loss if they were to let him leave for free.
