Chris Sutton sends indirect dig after what just happened at Celtic and Rangers
Chris Sutton has called out the “whinging” over Celtic’s late win at Kilmarnock on a day where Rangers kept themselves in the title race.
Rangers fans were licking their lips when lowly Kilmarnock went 2-0 up against arch nemesis Celtic on Sunday in the Scottish Premiership, only for them to complete a dramatic comeback.
Julian Araujo’s 97th-minute goal completed the turnaround in a 3-2 victory as Celtic scored a late winner for the third game in a row.
Thankfully for Danny Rohl‘s side, Rangers twice came from a goal down to beat leaders Hearts in a dramatic 4-2 win at Ibrox later on Sunday.
Now, Celtic legend Sutton has hit out at “sour grapes” over his old side’s stoppage-time winners, with Rangers hero Kris Boyd one of those questioning the amount of time added on they are receiving.
Chris Sutton defends Celtic as Kris Boyd fires out Martin O’Neill warning
On 7 February, Celtic scored a 97th-minute equaliser against Dundee through Adamu before winning 2-1 in extra time in the Scottish Cup fifth round.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored a 91st-minute winner in a 2-1 victory over Livingston last Wednesday in the league, before another late show on Sunday, this time at Kilmarnock.
Kilmarnock boss Neil McCann was not happy about the seven minutes added on against Celtic, with Boyd later sticking the boot in to the Hoops.
He said on Sky Sports: “The board, they should just change it to ‘play until Celtic score’. Just hold the board up and say that.”
Boyd then fired a warning to O’Neill’s team, saying they can’t keep that trend up.
This may have prompted Sutton to defend the seven minutes added on in the Celtic game, saying other fans were just “jealous”, with plenty of comments on social media too.
Sutton wrote: “For all the whinging about the seven minutes added on at Kilmarnock. Seven minutes was light in truth with the lengthy stoppages for Lyons and Thompson.
“Sour grapes springs to mind and jealousy.”
Some even joked that an opposition side needs to walk off when Celtic gets added time, akin to Senegal exiting the field in the Africa Cup of Nations final.
Intriguing Scottish Premiership title race in store
With Celtic beating Kilmarnock and Rangers smashing Hearts in a six-goal thriller, the title race is heating up heading into the final third of the season.
After Rangers’ disappointing 1-1 draw with Motherwell in midweek, Hearts went five points clear above the Gers in the table.
However, that deficit is now down to two, while Celtic are a point back in third, although they have a game in hand.
